  • wonder how long before they're stickered and tagged

  • *any one got WAC stickers left? we could let hippy get to work on making a hireable cunster

  • wonder how long before they're stickered and tagged

Not long, ive noticed a certain green irish themed sticker (clover or summit iono) on the ones in camden and the ones by Euston station.
That was a day after they we're released. Hopefully they'll all turn out like that. (meaning stickered to death, add a bit of "city" to them, theyre wayyyyy too clean.)

  • Is there any truth behind the 'cluster bombs...' stickers and if there is, is it still generally regarded as OK to hire a bike from such people?

  • ^ thanks for the informative link. I doubt that I'll hire one. Perhaps though, in time, these shady dealings will cease and 'the world will cycle together as one'...but it seems really unikely

  • as for the whole Barclays advertising thing, fuck it, if it gets more people on bikes I can happily overlook the horrible blue.

    Agree Mrlemon
Went out for a ride (for the first time since my injury and) since the launch of the hire bikes. Sat in LMNH, I know its been said but it was a joy to see the variety and number of people using the bikes, many in work clothes, some riding with saddles too low, some with confidence and some meekly moving by the curb, all looking like they were having fun.

Really felt good to see and made me feel quite optimistic about the scheme however it is funded. Really seem to love riding those bikes. Vivre velondon!

who do you bank with then? make sure you have no connections to "unethical" dealings? puh-leez, even riding a bike is contributing to environmenal degradation from the mines and energy required o extract ore, your supermarket exploits cheap labour, your clothes are made by children, your computer uses rare metals from mines that would raise an eyebrow on the face of the hardest businessman etc etc. get over it.

  • I find myself not caring and enjoying the fact that more people are cycling.

Oh, and I've discovered that the bikes skid really really well. Especially in the wet, especially around corners.

    Hell yeah.

The Barclays sponsorship debate is fucking boring... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I was interested, a little, to know how the cluster bomb sticker idea came about and interested to know the general mood/feeling about it. I wasn't really interested in discussing personal banking choices/'environmental degradation' etc - it's an obvious thing that we all rely, to a degree, on processes that are often connected to exploitation, as you put it. I was wondering more about how people think about the connection between personal ethics and idea of corporate responibility. I am excited by your advice to 'get over it', though(t).

  • Please, PLEASE tell me you're this guy.

the cluster bomb sticker probably had something to do with this and this but is now rather moot since this. and what i was trying to illustrate previously is that no matter what your personal ethics, things are fucked up.

  • You know, I find it slightly interesting that Barclays don't shout a bit louder about how they remained profitable and refused the bailout money during the banking crisis. They get subjected to "we bailed the banks out" rhetoric (much of it perfectly valid of course) but have yet to defend themselves by saying "Not us, actually".

Maybe it's because the people they did recapitalise off are highly 'respectable' types, such as Arabic royalty, and they did benefit indirectly.

  • Anyone notice how the terminals are pretty unreliable at the moment ?

  • When does the "non-member" hire go live?

  • Does anyone else have trouble getting the bikes out the stands? I have to lift the back wheel and properly wrench it out.

    It's easier if you pay

  • Knew I was doing something wrong. I had to bounce it on the back wheel to get it out today. Also, its official, you can ride them back into the docking points.
And if anyone gets one covered in coffee and with a fucked back brake, my bad.

Yes there is a lot of truth, but it shouldn't effect your hiring as they are mearly advertisers, they don't make money from the scheme (do they?!).

Josh I am hardly I a bleeding heart liberal (currently work for a shady insurance company and previously in the oil and gas industry) but it's not hard to bank ethically, coop, britania building society... In fact any building society... No need to be a vegan and wear hemp.

  • The streets are ours.

Sadly I think the Duke of Westminster has some bad news for you.

the title is taken from something Oscar Wilde's mother said. Interesting fact of the day.

  • Neil Boorman is right.

Well, yes, but he's not original or really insightful. He's unappealing because he is a typical media solipsist. Things only become important when they affect him. And having become, in that way, truly important of course he has to tell us all about it. It's not enough for him to change, he has to be seen to change. His subject is not the real subject; he is the subject, he is what he actually finds interesting.
Accompanied as ever in these kind of risible 'experiments' by an overweening sense of self pity: "The first months of my brand-free life were hell" and "I was also forced to plan ahead." as well as justifying his basic shallowness and self-absorption with some cod-scientific pathology "I suffered from a condition known as obsessive branding disorder" He should have listened to his mother a lot earlier in life.

It's just the cluster bomb financiers advertising on the bike? Better, but still not great. Interested in how it all works. I reckon it's a good thing to have hire bikes and wouldn't condemn anyone for hiring one but still think it's v.necessary and worthwhile to be critical of the advertising and way it's sponsored etc etc. (Not a vegan/hemp wearer either).
