  • Does anyone on here have the 'Planet X Pro Carbon SRAM Rival Road Bike'?

Seriously considering it over the 'Canyon Ultimate AL 9.0', which seems to be going up in price.

With an extra £170, the PX can be had with a carbon seat post and upgraded drive train from Rival to Force.

The Canyon has generally better equipment to my mind and has better looks - including the internal routing which I'm a total sucker for, but I'm thinking that the PX is the one to go for as I'll save about £370 all things considering. Just looking for a good enough reason not to get the PX. Any horror stories?

Hmm no contest IMHO, cheap carbon from an importer or well designed ally from a bicycle manufacturer. Ditto pretty reliable Shimano vs fussy SRAM.

  • So, cheap and fussy wins?

  • Yup, I'm just here to start a fight.... actually fit trumps all.........

  • I'd go for the Canyon, but it is a fair chunk of money more than the PX

  • I'd go for Canyon everytime however great Planet X are.

  • Oh yeah, I knew that, more for the look really. The cervelo looks very mechanical, I fancied something with a bit of class. There's a Battaglin frame set, also from planet x but it's ugly as hell

    ?!

Cervelo's are pure class. Elegant and understated graphics, lovely modern shape. Tons and tons of high tech innovation / marketing.

The R5 is up there as one of my dream bikes.

  • I guess you don't live in Surrey?

They are common as muck here.

    Looks down nose

  • Would definitely have a Cervélo, though I appreciate it is a matter of taste (if the aero qualities aren't the primary requirement, in which case Cervélo ftw). 2012 S2 frameset for a grand here in a couple of sizes:

Would take that over pretty much anything short of an Italian-made crabon Colnago. Personally.

The key to finding an internet bargin.

It tends to cost more to get a bike from a shop, having a quick measurement, explaining your usuage, and having a couple recommendations to test ride.

You only get the 'bang for buck' internet stores seem to offer. If you already have a good idea of your fit needs, and the sort of road bike you want.

That said. Get the Storck frame I posted.

  • I guess you don't live in Surrey?

No. London. What with it being a London forum and all ;)

But I have been outside London to places like Richmond Park and you're right they're hardly boutique. But the aero marketing info, low weight and pretty colours have me sold.

Which is why them and LOOKs are up there as my dream road bikes.

I was wondering what up with that, I was even considering that it's Cervelo's MAMIL Testing Ground.

    Until I saw a Moots.

  • I was poised and ready to get a Carbon Ribble with SRAM Rival groupset and Kyrsium Elite's, but they've "updated" their range now and are only offering Shimano and Campag. Which is a bit annoying.

    Is Centaur any good?

Can you get a decent frame with Rival and those wheels for around £1500?

  • Thanks for the comments on PX vs Canyon. It's helped convince me to hold out and save for the Canyon, or just blow out the credit card if we have an amazing spring.

I just can't take the brand seriously. Cervelo. Imagines californian accent Genius.

I got owned by one the other day. (Might have been reflection)

  • Don't get me wrong, I've always wanted a cervelo, my uncle rides one and borrowing it for a ride was what got me into road biking and off my mountain bike. But the last couple of years colours scheme are a tad boring, don't you think? I preferred the 2009 designs.

And this is me just being picky but campag suits an Italian styled bike, obviously

And for the record, I'm doing Ironman UK this summer so an aero frame would be a bonus

  • if you're serious about being a credible competitor in ironman, then have a read of this article > http://www.triradar.com/gear/best-ironman-bikes-review/1/ < and look at the brands mentioned.

  • cheers for that, an interesting read. In my dreams I'd be able to afford a race bike as well as a training bike, but in reality I'm looking for an all rounder which will serve its purpose in the Alps this summer as well as on a flat ironman course

  • Wanting an Italian frame is cool, I just think there's nothing that fits the bill. There aren't that many aero road frames yet (as opposed to full on TT/tri frames), especially Italian, and Cervelo will generally be more aero than the rest since they've put so much effort into designing their frames to be properly aero for years.

There's the Bianchi Oltre, but it's way out of your price range. Maybe Dedaccai do an aero road frame...? Can't see one from a quick look of their site, although this looks like a laugh:

  • Looking to get a road bike on the cycle to work scheme so have £1000 max to spend. Is carbon out of the question at the price? I'm looking for something that is great for long distance and also looks half decent. Any recommendations would be appreciated as I really know very little about road bikes.

Planet-X usually do something with a SRAM mix for a grand.

But a good alu frame might actually be better at the same price.

    ^^ The Super Scuro maybe?

There's a Wilier aero road frame:

    http://www.sigmasport.co.uk/p/20457/imperiale-frameset-2011/

    Or how about:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/de-rosa-merak-ii-carbon-frameset-2013/

The guerciotti is a deda Scuro RS frame, same as available from Ribble and various others.

The Merak is my dream frame, but I really can't go over a grand. The Cervelo is the obvious choice, but I wanted something a bit different, and yeah, I am in Surrey....

  • Hah.

Yeah, I think the Scuro RS makes less of a claim to be aero than the Super Scuro, but to be honest, your riding position, clothes and wheels will make a much bigger difference to your aerodynamics than your choice of road frame.

  • Shame on you Regal!

Go and stand in the corner and repeat "marginal gains" 50 times.
