  • Also why so anti clipless if you don't mind me asking?

  • Go clipless. Clips and straps are for cunts.

  • Jimmy - I have the QP Tourer - the best ever SPD day shoes ever - I wouldn't do a long ride in them. Not because they would be uncomfortable, just because I want to keep them in good condition

  • ^^^^ I use the QP fixed shoes with clips and straps and like them quite a lot. Be warned however that the soles are very slippery when it's wet. Must be something about the compound they use that makes the sole firm. But they are exceptionally comfortable.

  • I think once I post a pic up people will realise why clips not clipless, despite having a modern groupset it's a very retro bike.

But mostly it's because I fear change

  • Oh and thanks for the shoe tips. How about pedals? Any views on vintage Campy?

  • Has DJ taken over your account Ed? I distinctly remember that very phrase on his T-shirt

  • edscoble on password security

or give your password to someone else to change the password for you.

No, I went from clipless to clipful.

Campag pedals are silver alloy, so look good on most bikes. Riding clipped in, is the single biggest improvement I've felt in cycling. Period.

If your unsure get some pedals with a MTB style clamp on one side, and fittings for clips and straps on the other.

    Quoted for good sense.

  • I think it's a bit far fetched to claim that people are cunts for not going for clipless, it's great for racing, sportif and the like, but it's not absolutely necessary for everything else.

I genuinely think it's very much a personal preference in the end rather than which is superior (clipless obviously, but that's not the point).

  • it's great for racing, sportif, touring, commuting and the like, but it's not absolutely necessary for walking your bike along Old St

    ftfy

  • Ed, if you read the title of this thread you'll notice that it is all about road bike recommendations NOT tourers, folders, moultons or anything else.
Go anywhere in the world where there is a large road bike riding community and near on 100% of the riders will be clipless, for good reason.

Now troll on to a thread which you have a good foundation of knowledge for and dish out your advice there.

  • Now now don't be a cunt...

  • Did I swear or belittle you in my last?

No, I most certainly did not!

What I should have posted was:
Ed you fucking RETARD, quit giving advice and opinion on subjects you have NO FUCKING CLUE about!

  • attaboy.

man want to ride with clip and strap, who are we to says otherwise?

    this is all I'm saying.

  • Take this to a clip/clipless thread please, chaps. Or start one elsewhere.

  • Ribble will invoice you twice if you ask them, one for £1k and one for the rest. I have one of their gran fondo's which is much better now the steerer's been cut and the bars are lower. It's super stable on fast descents and does a great job of nullifying road buzz. Wanted the Cayo but was out of stock for ages when I was buying and don't regret my decision now.

  • I'm usually sceptical about MTB brands building road bikes (see Orange road bike for a good example) but I really like how the new Cotic is shaping up. Seems plenty of people want steel these days, and this could be a good offering.

Also noticed these on the same site. Brifters are brilliant on utility bikes, I love them. But this is plan ugly.

Don't beat about the bush Mr P, tell us what you really think.

So he should move to pistonheads or mumsnet?

Its hideous, but its gonna solve my cx brake problem. Deffo getting a pair when the Tekro V brake lever one goes on sale. Gear shifting from the hoods, with road levers that pull full Vs. YES PLEASE.

  • Just to throw my 2p in to the upthread row, I used clips and straps until I was 15, switched to the double ended (XT) SPD pedals (the other option was LX, which only had the spring at the back) and have never had case to regret it.

Kick the pedal and you are attached firmly to the bike- what's not to like?

Clips and straps have their place on retro builds that would look odd with clipless, but using them now is an affectation in many ways- a deliberate use of a more cumbersome, less efficient technology. On road bikes that is- I can see the point for the round town commuter who wants to wear one pair of shoes, I should add.
