I think the Stans rims could build into a great set of 'nice' wheels for me. The low depth and high volume should mean they're very comfortable and lighter than the Kinlin 240 things.
I want a wheelset that is great for 100 mile+ group rides (so aero not a priority) and I weigh 60kg.
This is were I start doubting the suitability of low-depth rims.
I'm 85Kg with ambitions of hitting 90Kg before next spring.

anyone got any info on / experience with the 8:16 sp hubs?
-
• #1854
^^ Yes, they make less sense for heavier riders if performance > comfort.
They do sell them in 24, 28 and 32h flavours though.

they've got a dt swiss 585 build with those hubs on their site I'm interested in - I'm relatively heavy (86kg) - should I be looking elsewhere? Would I be better off getting a Miche primato build with those rims from Parker?

The Superstar hubs get good reviews amongst the MTN'ing crowd. You can get custom builds through them too. If you want a couple extra spokes. I've bought loads of stuff off them, but not the hubs I'm afraid.

My philosphy is, to to get where I'm going so fast, that I dont have time for discomfort. ;)
But as you start adding stuff to compensate for rim stiffness. You get to a point were you might as well get some aero for similar weight. Better bracing angles too.

Claimed rim weight is 340gsm !!!
If hippy rode these >>> /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/AC do a normal magnesium clincher lighter than that. I spit on your tubs/weird alternative beads.

They might explode in a blinding flash if ridden too fast though.

Sturdy deep rims and low spoke count = tough but fun training wheels. They look good value.
As SF says... comfort isn't an issue really for 20-40 mile rides (week night rides etc).
I use a pair of Aksiums for this. They keep coming back from the dead and do the job just fine.

After 120 miles on a wet Sunday my arse disagrees. The rest of the time... I totally agree.

Yep. Being lighter than average the configuration most OTP wheels mean I'm riding around with stiffer rims than needed. Shimano wheels (with the c24 rims) are the exception.

There is potential for awesome/ridiculous brake pad developments.

Which is essentially what I want. To be honest the zertz things in my S-Works Roubaix make it so comfy I think I could sacrifice some comfort in wheels in exchange of something that would be stiff / not flexy - I seem to be able to get most factory wheels to move around when out of the saddle

^ I've just noticed they do have alloy nipples.
Dave Hinde (and probably lot of other people) build Mavic CXP33 rims and Ambrosio hubs. That's perhaps a combo worth considering.

they have those Ambrosio hubs to Open Sports, with tubes, rim tape and pair of cheapo Vittoria's on their site for £130.. good deal, but would prefer Open Pros to Sports

£999

^ Free bike with your SRAM Red. Well, Red mechs and levers anyway.

What do you reckon I'd get for one of those with Force shifters and rear mech on it?
-

£650-700?
Would make a pretty awesome training bike.
Another bike overhaul Dammit? :)

I'm sure they could do Open Pros or even better CXP33s on those hubs on request.
I know a few people that bought Open Pro on Ambrosio fixed wheelsets from them when they sold them for £110. No problems with them AFAIK.

^^^^ just saw that too....
....even with the red gaps, that's a pretty good deal.

They did the same deal with their Pro Carbon frame last year, amazingly. A friend of mine bought one. It took a veeery long time to come through, it ended up with FSA cranks and Planet-X brakes, and PX wheels instead of the Fulcrums it was specced with, but it had the Red mechs and levers and he did indeed pay £999.

Are you thinking of going to SRAM Red? Don't bother. It's all change next year.
-
• #1872
Idly speculating about getting that P-X bike, swapping the shifters and rear mech off, but no more than that.
What do you think will happen next year?
-
• #1873
At least 100g lighter for the whole groupset (I reckon the next milestone is 1750g), a completely new crank and new chainrings (SRAM rings are shit, they flex way too much). The hoods could also do with an overhaul, compared to the Di2 hoods they're really uncomfortable. Possible move towards BB386 too which looks set to become the dominant new industry standard.
Their MTB offerings will spearhead development, expect to see that go electric/hydraulic before ther road groupset.

I much prefer carbon frames, I find alu frames really harsh. The Planet X fixed spec road bikes at £1,000 are amazing bikes and really good value. We've had one for over a year and it's brilliant.

If only it didn't have Planet X written down the side in big letters
