So is it really valid to estimate ftp as 75% MAP? Is there any research on this?
75% is the middle of the bell curve I understand, the general range is 72-77%.

"To calculate your FTP, the Firstbeat analytics engine requires a stable VO2max estimate and enough quality heartbeat data recorded across a range of different intensities from low to high. Because external workload is a factor in the calculation, you will also need to ensure your bike’s power meter is connected to your device. Data can be gathered during a guided test specifically designed to record the data needed to detect your FTP, or it can be calculated from normal running activities that include enough quality heartbeat data from each zone.
Once this data is obtained, the Firstbeat analytics engine identifies your FTP level by isolating the deflections in your heart rate variability that correlate to key indications of how your respiration patterns respond to the intensity of your activity."

That's what I said above.
"I think they use 75% MAP but they footnote it with "The majority of references found describe that FTP and MAP correlates in such a manner that FTP for most athletes are in the range of 72%-75% of MAP.""

Should be a very comfortable 1st cat with those numbers...

Actually I take that back. I know a couple of people in a similar ball park and they're as aero as bricks and can't sprint for toffee!

Cat 1 or 2 I'd guess but I never raced here so I don't know the jumps between Cats so well.
Could be A or B grade in Melb but again you can have a lot of power but not know how to use it or be a lump (hello mirror) but at 78kg he should be ripping up some races, which is why I find it pretty funny he's asking questions on a fixie skidder forum. I mean, I know it has some legends on it smooths hair back but I'd assume people would head over to wattage or something. -

I found out last year that decent FTP does not a racer make. Especially if it’s undermined by lack of race craft and an aversion to following the wheel of a junior at 75kph on a descent. And no top end.

From the TT thread, I think he’s won a few TTs.

I’ve been using the watch for training and racing for about 9 months so the VO2max numbers should be pretty stable*. The ftp estimate provided from the test seems reasonable to me, but I will try a ramp test on Tuesday to compare the results.
Once this data is obtained, the Firstbeat analytics engine identifies your FTP level by isolating the deflections in your heart rate variability that correlate to key indications of how your respiration patterns respond to the intensity of your activity."
This is the section that seems like a black box to me- I don’t know of any academic work that links ftp and hrv, and firstbeat obviously don’t want to publish it because it’s sensitive.
What I’m wondering is whether other people have experience with the Garmin/firstbeat test, and whether they found it to deliver reasonable estimates of ftp? Because if it does then it makes an attractive (quick and easy) protocol for repeated testing.
[asterisk] * some of the other Garmin/firstbeat metrics seem a bit inconsistent. For instance, my automatically detected threshold running pace is too slow while my predicted race performances are too fast.
The watch currently calculates threshold pace as 4:29/km based on a training session in mid October, however I ran a marathon at 4:22/km a couple weeks after that session and it didn’t update. Additionally, while estimating that my threshold pace is 4:29/km, it predicts I should run a 1:23 half marathon (3:56/km pace) and 2:53 marathon (4:06/km pace).

"VTs estimated using HRV and gas methods were significantly correlated. Correlation in HR values was higher between R and HRV (r = 0.96) and VE and HRV (r = 0.96) than V-slope and HRV (r = 0.90)"

Yeah, just like a long road race.
You expect them to be out there sitting at 1000W all month?

If you can do it, why can’t they?

We all know pros are weak, pampered, drug-taking, moving billboards. They're only good for a few hours then need a lie down.

Looks right. When riding 25h a week your intensity is going to be lower.
That’s some threshold. Do you race?
