Surely it's simple, people report = action taken? So report the gif if you feel it has no place.

From my side I wouldn't check the gif thread at work but would check the photo of the day thread...

It is pretty much that simple.

The idea of what is acceptable is subjective by nature. So the best thing I can do is to remove myself from the equation as much as possible and let the subjectivity be determined by the consensus of the community.

Even now, after much attention has been brought to it, the gif of the woman drinking hasn't received a single report.

If I'm basing my actions on reports... you can very plainly see why marcom got slapped again and again, and nothing has happened regarding the gif of the woman drinking.

And because I'm aware that the report system can be gamed, and grudges exercised... I ignore solitary reports, and reports in the instances in which I know those reporting have some beef with the author of the post being reported.

So there's a couple of safeguards... one big fundamental one against my opinion being the thing that initiates any action, and then one against individuals being jerks and abusing the process.

What left is really what I've described... the community get to determine what they feel acceptable by reporting what they determine to be unacceptable. That simple. And that subjectivity varies over time, so I just keep listening to the community.

Oh, and hilariously... for someone being accused of showing bias... no-one has stopped to ask whether I find the images marcom posted objectionable. And the answer is no. I'm fine with them. Anyone who actually knows me would know that... I've no issue with that content, but the community does and I really do act in the interest of the community and will enforce whatever the community standard they communicate is.

After that, it's just about how much grace someone shows when I have to act. marcom shows zero grace, and a lot of fight. Which is futile and silly, and amusing at times... but it's not going to change my behaviour, I'll still do what the reports guide me to do.
