  • My Trek hybrid has a 20 spoke front wheel and 24 rear with V factory built (bontrager SSR) rims. Front has been fine, popped a few rear spokes, though after getting the wheel swapped via warranty it's been fine since. I'm 20st. Kinda tracks with the 1 spoke rule ;)

  • Cool, so basically what you retards is saying like is lose a stone and you'll be sweet.

  • Not sure anyone who is 18 stone could be descrided as sweet but you would meet the 'official' one spoke per stone guideline.

    Serious answer:

Get a seriously stiff 30+mm profile rim and you'll be fine. To give the wheel adequate stiffness without a deep profile rim, considering your weight, and the low 18 spoke count. The spoke tensions would be too high.

I'd give these a try. American Classic 420, 34mm deep, alu clincher, 460g.

  • ...although losing 14Lbs will make you far faster than losing 14 spokes ;)

Depends what kind of fast. If its for short sprints, losing the weight might make him weaker & less powerful.

For longer/road rides. Of course being light is a massive advantage.

  • Err, no it isn't. Aero wins over weight in most circumstances.

  • i probably wouldnt run an 18 spoke wheel at 19 stone.

try and sell it on for some profit, and buy something a bit more appropriate.

bit of a false economy if you have to replace a spokes every couple of weeks innit, or if you build it with super strong spokes then you pay a weight or price penalty depending on the direction you go.

Depends what kind of weight loss surely? At 19 stone I would imagine a fair bit of that is fat. So if you lost weight properly they the stone of weight would be fat wouldn't it?
At 19 stone you are hardly going to be eating into muscle supplies when losing weight are you?

  • Serious answer:

Don't do it, it would be madness, I would have said it's fine for a 12 year old on a 24" wheel...but 19 stone!!!!...all those on here who have encouraged you should be held culpable when you end up in hospital.

I would have thought 14lbs of flesh was more of a aerodynamic hinderance then 14 spokes ;)

I reckon a 35mm or more rim would hold up fine. Just my unqualifed opinion though. I would'nt ride them off any kerbs though.

Jump off a bridge. Did you do it? No? Why not?
Oh, you've got your own system of reasoning that means you don't always do what you are told. Fantastic.

not saying it aimed at the OP, but some people on here dont exactly have the most reasonable minds.

  • Darwin has a system in place for them..

  • Darwin's theory has long gone out the window with modern healthcare/drugs. Everyone is now living easily long enough to procreate, even those people running 18 spoke wheels and weighing 19 stone.

  • hehe

Chance would be a fine thing.

I think you'll find that Wispa beats Aero.

  • Not in my world. Hmmm, peppermint bubbles.

As a shallow and scheming ad man I've always been secretly envious of the charlatan who came up with selling consumers less for more.

"I know we'll give them chocolate bars but pumped full of air!". "Tristan, you're a fucking genius!".

At least that's how I like to imagine the conversation went when I'm recreating it with Star Wars figures.

  • We get Nugatti Air here. foamed chocolate spread. Not the best sandwich filler if you want to be rocking low spock counts, but fecking lovely.

  • Is this ^ the first published photograph of tynan's special paste?

  • Hope not. I had some on toast shortly after posting it.

  • The more I think about it, the more I feel the wheel wil not be stiff enough (laterally, causing brake rub when puling on the bars etc.). Considering you're going to need to buy expensive deep section rims. It sees a bit of a waste for a wheel that doesnt suit the rider.

Still think it'd hold up fine, with a stif enough rim. It just woud'nt be idea for your weight.
