Clavicle Error - Broken Collarbone

  • Nick, I fell off in the rain, approaching a roundabout, doing a huge 5mph. (front wheel slide) after the shock, got back on and found I could not grip the brakes very well.

Home and bed. The next day could not move either my arms; both welded at the elbow. Hospital x-rays revealed no fracture.

Went skiing the next week. Could not pick up my case even had to have it carried. 1st fall, on 1st ski run could not get up... had to be helped.

When I returned, went from Heathrow, direct to the hospital... and I was a tad firm. X-ray me NOW.

    2x displaced radial heads!

I still suffer from time to time with 'clicking' elbows that lock.

So... do NOT take everything they say as gospel. I was later offered an elbow replacement. Luckily I refused point blank. (back then they were made of plastic and caused nothing but major problems. )

You will notice when doing physio that the radial head break, is not so much an issue of bending the elbow, but more with rotation at the wrist.

oh and buy a plastic cup-stainless beaker etc. You will go through china like mad for a few weeks (well I did)

PM me if you have other concerns, Heal up well fella.

  • You could try drinking through a straw. Difficulty with radial head is swivelling forearm, so leave cup on table and use a straw.

  • I feel a bit sick now, thinking about the screws floating about.

    you need magnets

  • Cheers for the advice guys, got more info here than I did after 4 hours in A&E. Pretty pissed about that actually, I mean get that they might be busy and that as far as they're concerned it was a minor injury. But sending you home without telling you any of this just seems like a lack of giving a shit at all

  • oh and if you lift anything heavy / direct pull on the joint, your arm will fall right off...

  • Haha, best be careful of that one then

  • right,
the docs banned me from riding til sept, so the bone heals,

have been on buses for last couple of weeks for all journeys,
have you ever been on a bus?

    fuck me.
    analysis:-
nightmare, stop all the time, go round every bit of 2 bit estates they can, dont run ontime, full of mrs brady old ladies, stinky tramps and losers clearly without the will to manage any other way of moving their carcases and shopping bags around the place.

    let me back to cycling!
    analysis:-
arriving exactly when I want to arrive to the minute
stopping feet away from the entrance of place I need to be
going as slow or as fast is my choice
choosing routes that suit my mood and best transit

01st sept cant come quick enough and clavicle will be set

  • But please stick with it, as awful as it is, not healing properly will be far more unpleasant. You will be on buses for years and years. A weeks extra recovery now may postpone the bus pass usage for an extra 10 years. Stay strong.

This advice brought to you by a man who is currently riding around with a perforated scrotum.

  • It's still sound advice though.

  • new thread needed? scrotum error?
    ...
unfortunate that my dogged insistance in staying on doc advice led me to posting details for you unfortunate lot to read, will stick it out though yes.

  • clearly noones ever been on a bus...

  • I was knocked off my bike earlier this evening by a bloke on a mountain bike who unexpectedly and stupidly pulled out in front of me without looking at all. Full high speed impact with him and then the road. Ouch.

Consequently I have a broken collarbone. How long should it take to heal?

I got the guy's number - are there any other details I should have taken?

    Ta.

I broke mine last year. 4-6 weeks they said but I was riding after 3. It hurt a bit tossing a messenger bag over that side the first few months because they dont heal very flat.

  • Blimey I felt like biking after 3 but wanna be able to do minutes handstanding again

  • clearly noones ever been on a bus...

I have, I feel your pain which is why I posted as unpleasant as it is, the potential for future grief and even a lifetime on the bus means you should grin and bear it, smug in the knowledge that in a month or so you will be on the transport that was intended for mankind for lifetime.

  • clearly noones ever been on a bus...

Buses are marginally better than tube trains. Which are marginally better than proper trains.
All of them do my head in, which is why I ride a bike.
When waiting for my bones to heal I ended up walking the 3 miles from work to home every day because the thought of getting on the tube and then a train after a hard day's work made me want to kill people. Mostly all the people in Waterloo station, and all the ones in the City of London.

  • My Top Two bus journeys

    • a packed rail replacement from Lewisham on a sunny day and someone eating a can of pilchards in seat behind me

    • a lunchtime journey from Camden Town to Warren St on a 29 with someone smoking crack cocaine on the back seat. Really catches the back of your throat does the old secondhand crack smoke.

    Oh, HTFU you ninny. :)

I find I can't use rucksacks for any length of ride for this reason. Right hand strap sits in the notch and irritates after 10 mins or so. Messenger bags work for me and I guess you can left hand/right hand sling depending on which side you went down on.

    Hahaha!

Only a few month ago I got on a deserted No.43 quite late and was was struck by a really strong smell of piss, As I walked up the aisle I eyed up every seat looking for the safest option and I thought I had it but typically I chose the soggy one.

  • Bus wanker.

    Careful you dont burn yourself

  • Joined this club on Sunday, hence the dredge - anyone else currently sitting out a clavicle debacle?

  • I'm about 5 weeks in, just getting back on the bike. Broke my left one right near the end, and stretched my AC. Just started physio to try and strengthen everything back up.

    Road buzz is a killer!
