  • Its too heavy.

  • I want a Rohloff equipped tourer so much.

  • The Alfine is coming out with 11speed in the next few months. I'd save a grand and get one of those instead.

  • is it that soon? I though it's coming out in 2011.

if that's the case, fuck yeah, now I'm glad I didn't specced my new bike with a singlespeed tranmission instead of an Alfine 8 speeds one.

really like the 9 speed SRAM, but they don't appear to be as reliable as the Shimano despite having a good gear range.

  • I think its this year, we have some on back order at the shop. The new Alfine 11 is going to be the nuts!

  • any chance you know what's the price going to be? defintely higher than the current 8 speeds I gather.

  • I've heard around £350 but that is just a complete guess.

  • that's a reasonable guess.

Once you're out on the road the hub spins up to speed well – even with three extra gears, it's going to be about 100g lighter than the eight speed at about 1590g, that's 120g lighter than a Speedhub
lighter than a Rohloff? that'll win it for me.

from here, the more I read it, the more fantastic it sound.

  • The current alfine's aren't supposed to be that great at shifting under load though, no?

  • In the new one's they have tapered the cogs to compensate for this, it all gets a bit geekey from there on wards.

  • any chance you know what's the price going to be? defintely higher than the current 8 speeds I gather.

£375 for hub, £50 for changer. due end of September

  • do you mean I gotta put together another bike for 2011?
something like....new hub geared titanium cross bike.
    hmmmmmmm

  • The current alfine's aren't supposed to be that great at shifting under load though, no?

They are not too bad - mine is from 09. Going uphill and searching for a lighter gear can cause a few problems. Momentarily lifting off sorts it out.

  • Or choose a gear and stay with it before you go uphill, use the same technique on the road bike to avoid wasted energy.

  • i want a geared hub for use on a cyclocross bike, but i dont know if its a good idea.

what hubs are good for offroad?

  • might be touch heavy in the back end for cross?? (i dont know, just saying like).

  • not planning on racing it

  • Excuse the mega thread dredge but seems better than starting a new thread...

Anyone know much about Nexus 4 speed hubs?

I've bought one to put on my Pompino butstruggling to find a shifter for it.

There's a few on ebay but they're extortionate. Wondering if the pull would be same as anything else.

Last resort will be a left hand gripshift with the fine clicks and mark the shift points on it somehow.

  • @M_V, you seen this?
    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-IG-cable-pull.html
If I've read it right it's 4.7mm per click
I wonder if you could use 8speed Shimano shifter which is 5mm per click, I know later Shimano IGHs are quite sensitive to cable issues but maybe the 4 speed isn't?

  • Ah thanks. I knew something like that would exist somewhere!

    I think it's a 4.7mm pull followed by a 5mm pull then a 5.1mm pull. Averages out to 4.9mm.

The 7 speed Nexus is pretty close and they should be a lot more readily available so might just go for a shifter designed for one of them.

  • @M_V you're right I couldn't quite read it all on my ipad, since the sheldon site re-jig it's gone to cock.
    good luck

  • Sachs Super 7 / SRAM s7 not working.

Powertip: When you replace the cable you MUST do two windings not one! This is hidden in the manual somewhere and not obvious.

Turn shifter to first gear. Put in cable. Shift to 4 and try to get shifter bit position in clickbox to line up with position in window as good as possible. Finish installing and start tuning.

YouTube videos don't address cable replacements but show how to tune if stuck.

  • I've bought (amongst other things) a Sturmey XRD3 rear hub from a guy on retrobike, I was hoping to fit it to my Humuhumu to increase Klunk factor but I failed to think about oln and/or axle length before buying. The OLN is just shy of 120mm and axle length around 145mm.

The axle is too long to just add spacers to make it fit the 135mm rear end of the Humu so I'm wondering if it's possible to change the axle for a longer one? I know the axles on these aren't as straight forward as a normal one but I'd be kinda surprised if longer versions weren't available. Or are you meant to buy a different hub if you want it to fit a 135mm frame?

I could cold set the rear of the Humu frame but looking for less permanent options first.

  • I replaced my S3x axle on SJS... seem to be pretty good for Sturmey parts.

  • @ M_V have you seen this?
    http://www.sturmey-archer.com/files/catalog/files/307/PART%20LIST%20-%20X-RD3.pdf
This shows the axle as being 177mm.
