Old style Shimano freewheel tool

Posted on
  • Usual searches done (Shimano, cassette and freewheel are popular words) but I can't see anything that answers the question, so apologies upfront for that. However...

I have an old bike I'm furtling with. I'd like to shift the cassette and freewheel off but the tool isn't quite right. I have a Shimano freewheel removal tool and although the teeth/splines/whatever inside the freewheel are VERY similar in config to the tool, they are definitely set differently - shallower and possibly a different number (I haven't counted, can if it's important). The freewheel is marked as "Shimano MF-2012" and might be pretty old, I have no idea when it was fitted to the bike but the bike is about 30yrs old. I'm assuming I need a different tool but LBS at work seemed puzzled when I asked if there was an older style Shimano frewheel tool.

I found this link to a Shimano MF/Campag removal tool, which looks about right: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/ice-toolz/shimano-mf-campag-cassette-tool-ec018386Is that the beastie I need?

As I don't need the freewheel again, I could also try the hammer-and-punch method, but the teeth are VERY shallow, so there's not much corner there to punch into. Has anyone tried it? Easier just just to spend the fiver on the right tool?

  • Is it urgent? I have one that is similar.

  • I used to have one of these.. for Uniglide/Ultraglide?, Hyperglide freewheels. I've got no idea if I have it with me though. I'll have a look tongiht.

  • @lynx No, not urgent, just annoying. There's a part-dismantled wheel in my living room that I don't want to put away without having finished it, otheriwse the bits will get separated, I know it.

  • @hippy Yep, think that's probably the one. This pic of the hyperglide looks pretty close.

  • Come to east beers tonight with the wheel.

  • Don't finish til 7pm tonight, how late you there til?

  • Till late.

    You're close. It's not 2012 but Z012.
    Maybe that helps.
Looks like you found the right tool.
A Shimano cassette (CS) lockring removal tool doesn't work. You need a removal tool for multiple freewheels (MF).
I got one. Can you come by ?

  • Do I have to come to Holland to borrow it though?

  • Might be cheaper to buy a new one.

  • Well I'm in The Dam in early July? Should I bring the wheel on the plane..? ;-)

  • In the past i have used a centre punch to undo the outer lockring so you can then grip the space where the ratchet pawls go with a vice. more work than the right too though but ok if you like taking things apart.

  • Where exactly did you hit with the punch? I'm tempted to try this, just out of sheer curiosity.

  • In one of the 2 dimples.
But note that is has LH thread, so clockwise for loosening.

HyperGlide and UniGlide use different removal tools. They look alike, but aren't exactly the same.
    This is the HyperGlide tool:
    eBay-image-link-fail

    This is the UniGlide tool:
    eBay-image-link-fail

The can be had for 2-3£ on eBay: HyperGlide & UniGlide I'm pretty sure you need the UniGlide version...

  • I do it like this, but probably should advise safety glasses and keeping a good hold of the wheel.

Then I probably had more than one.

OP: I've had a look and they must still be in Oz. Guess I didn't see much need for ye olde bike tools.
