  • Right... Does anyone know of anyone who does re-paint jobs in Birmingham/Midlands?

I don't think I really want to go down the powdercoating route, so it has to be re-enamel. I have seen Lee Cooper in Coventry, but alas I don't have the money to pay for one of his jobs (£95).

Hoping for a Mario Vaz of the Midlands?
    Haha, cheers

  • There are tons of Car spray shops, any of them could do a bike easy.

  • £95 is a bargain for re-enamel.

  • DFP: yeah that's true, i'll have to see what they can offer.
spaghettihoops: that may be the case, but it's more than what i payed for the frame! and after i suggested powdercoating it in the gazelle thread, i felt like a puppy killer... Wouldn't want the dutch people to think I was a puppy killer, they seem pretty nice haha

  • check out city powdercoaters. They are just off Fazley st. in digbeth. £20 for the frame, forks and stem that is shot blasted and powder coated for that price. It is a cheap option, they do a good job too

  • Yeah, cheers. I'd seen them but I think I'll try to avoid going down the powdercoating route due to the fragility of my frame.

Powdercoating wont effect any steel frame, its the shot blasting which is rough & abrasive by its very purpose.

If you dont shot blast your frame, you will have to sand it by hand to make a nice rough surface for the paint to stick too.

Some people opt for bead blasting as a more gentle option, but its probably unnecessary except for the most ultra-thin premium tubing.

Yeah, I appreciate the powdercoating itself won't be a harmful process, but I guess I'll have to sand it by hand to roughen up the surface. The frame's made of 753r so it is pretty much as thin as steel gets. Also, I'll have to check what temperature the ovens are heated to because 753 is weakened if it is re-heated to a certain temperature.

But yeah, their prices are cheaper than anywhere else I've seen which is good.

  • If you are not keen on sanding. Use Nitromores paint stripper. Get a small tin from B&Q. That stuff works wonders.

  • Yeah I know, but the surface still needs to be sanded in order for the powdercoat to work, if I choose to go down that route.

  • Hassle of finding something to sand it appropriately, + powder coater who won't heat it up so much as to damage the tubing = go with the £95 offer from Lee Cooper for the re-enamel.

    No brainer.

Nitromors is really effective but you need to make sure you absolutely clean the frame after, like meticulously, as it hides in corners around lugs etc and will eat the new paint just as effectively.

  • I'd best save my pennies then...

Yes true. Just get some white spirits from B&Q as well and use that on the frame to clean off the Nitromors.

  • city powder coaters are alright.

  • Are you sure Lee Cooper still does his own painting ... I thought he only did frame building now he's moved from Far Gosford St?

    Rob

  • He's moved out to a place near Marton (after many years working from home in Ryton) and was talking of setting up a paint room out the back when I went visiting in late 09.

Looking at his website, it appears he's now done so (or else is taking jobs in and passing them on somewhere).

how long do they generally have the frame for? less than a week? 2 days?

  • My mate just fropped my old gitane frame (previously sprayed at bournes) there this morning - they said four day turnaround time. 20 quid for frame and forks seems ok, i can report back on the results next week.

  • how long do they generally have the frame for? less than a week? 2 days?

4 day turnaround for me when I dropped the frame off. The only down side is the don't have a huge variety of colour. The finish on the bike is pretty good. The £20 cost includes them bead/media blasting the frame as well.

  • I only need gloss black, so the lack of colour variety doesn't matter.

  • They have that, my mates having a matt black. they have a poster in the office with RAL colours on.

  • Well yeah, that's why it doesn't matter. Any powdercoater that doesn't have some sort of black paint variety would be a bit weird.
