  • Hi guys, as yet I cannot start a new thread so I hope this is an appropriate place to ask, I have my first lesson as an instructor on Saturday. I received training through CTUK with the very knowledgeable Skydancer but that was ages ago in the summer.

Does anyone have any tips for me, I feel like I've forgotten loads!

    Thanks

    Jay

  • Do you have your instructor guide book? and your worksheet?

re-read them as much as possible, they're invaluable and a good way to remember your lesson.

  • Top advice from Ed.
Think through the structure of your lesson. If you are a bit rusty there is no harm in having a check list to make sure you cover everything and do it in the correct order. Try and get your trainee to answer questions rather than telling them stuff. Use demonstrations before the drills. Keep an eye on the time but do it discretely so the trainee doesn't feel like time is an issue.
Relax; they don't know you are new to it. Make sure you do a checking call beforehand so you get some idea in advance of what they are like and what they want to achieve.

  • And most importantly - WHY?

    i.e.

instructor: "what do you do before you approach a junction"

    trainee: "look back"

    Instructor: "WHY?"

trainee: "er... to see if anyone behind me?"

  • Ed: How do you want to lock your bike up?
    Trainee: Securely
    Ed: Why?
Trainee: So you won't ask me how it was locked?

Teach the national syllabus, one level at a time, each skill within that level in order. That helps organise what you are doing, I hope!

  • Job as operations manager for cycle training company Bikeright! in Manchester
    http://www.environmentpost.co.uk/job.cfm?id=8461

  • ^ ach. talk about unappealing job description...

"We want a self-motivated, hands-on manager with direct experience of working in a fast paced environment and a demonstrable track record of deploying staff in various locations. The successful candidate will be expected to manage teams to deliver and exceed targets set through contracts and KPI’s."

I know it's an important job to get right, it just sounds so soulless.

  • ^You can make any job sound soulless. I think the job of a cycling instructor is the best job in the world. Here is a job description:

"Train cyclists to national standard trainee outcomes delivering training with minimum Risk. Keep accurate paperwork records of trainee progress including on and off road risk assessments. Deliver level 1 and level 2 outputs within the requisite time. Candidates will be trained to NSI(P) status, have excellent communication skills be able to motivate young people and have the basic maintenance skills.

    Sounds soulless no?

  • The key point to why I wanted to be an instructor is simply - to get more people to ride a bicycle (the number of benefit is too great to even list down here), and the wonderful feeling of seeing your trainee being able to ride a bicycle/work with the traffic effortlessly.

  • It was the paperwork that did it for me. That and the on-line feedback.

  • ...on-line feedback.

We put that in the job description to make it sound glamorous and sexy

  • The way I do it it is.
