  • Hand and Flowers yesterday for lunch. It's a pub and as such it's relaxed and easy going, but wow the food is stunning

    I had
Demi “En Croute” of Whole Baby Truffle with Foie Gras and Port
Slow Cooked Duck Breast with Savoy Cabbage, Duck Fat Chips and Gravy
and a side of Broccoli with Hollandaise Sauce and Toasted Hazelnuts
for desert Banana Soufflé with Gingerbread Custard and Yoghurt Ice Cream
really very good indeed, I really need to get back there
    The Mrs CP had
Lovage Soup with Bramley Apple, Smoked Eel, and Blue Cheese Tortellini
Lemon Sole “Grenobloise” with Noisette Hollandaise and Poultry Reduction. (minus the poultry reduction)
Hand & Flowers Chocolate and Ale Cake with Salted Caramel and Muscovado Ice Cream

Luckily it was a bit rich for her so I got a load of the chocolate cake as well.

Was thinking about heading back there on our anniversary weekend, but bloody hell it's booked up

  • noice...hungry now...

  • Recommendations for nice places to eat in Cornwall please.

We're staying near Newquay (in Mawgan Porth) but don't want to be dragged into the hell that is the town centre.

Two guys and four kids, the kids have better palates than either me or my mate!

Oh, decent veggie (not fish) options are a must!

    Thanks in advance

  • Nathan Outlaw's restaurant in Rock, is very very good. 2 different tasting menu's and there's a veggie one as well... bit spendy for kids though

in padstow rick Steins fish and chip shop is amazing it's by the port

  • I disagree. Outlaw's in Rock is overrated, and not a patch on how Fowey used to be.

Stein's fish & chips is good, but I prefer the cafe (the restaurant can do one >>>>>>>).

  • The Maltsters Arms, Chapel Amble, tends to be ok (IIRC the current management & chef are pretty good). If you're lucky, you'll bump into Harry Enfield and you can do your best Loads'a'money impressions.

L'Escargot in Rock is the latest incarnation of a fancypants restaurant on the same premises - last year it was pretty good.

Watergate bay - there's a Jamie Oliver gaffe.

  • Stein's Bistro is good?

  • Cafe, not Bistro.

  • Sorry, misplaced question mark. I haven't experienced the restaurant but his St. Petroc's Bistro is a different place and very good IMO.

  • Not tried the cafe either but totally loved the Fish and Chips. Queues were out of this world though. I thought I'd joined the queue for Nemesis at Alton Towers.

yeah I'm talking the plaice by the port, not the restaurant

  • Glad you liked the H&F CP, need to get back there myself :)

  • If you're going this weekend bear in mind it's 'Run To The Sun' weekend. So if you do decide to head from Mawgan Porth along the coast road past Watergate Bay then you will sit in the traffic leaving Trevelgue crawling into Newquay for a bit. This used to be a really good weekend of classics and VW's but it went a bit awol a few years back IMHO.

Still if you end up looking for a better than average pub meal with amazing views, I can recommend Lewinnick Lodge at Pentire (the Fistral end of Newquay). Not top top quality but very reasonably priced and a pretty good selection, e.g local razor clams, locally caught fish. Plus it normally has decent crowd inside.

  • Run for the Sun - oh shit, hadn't realised!

We're not leaving until early Sunday so hopefully we'll miss the traffic as they will have left on the Friday or Saturday - least it'll give the kids something to look at around town.

Will check out the places you have recommended and maybe make a couple of bookings.

    Thanks for the replies

    Cheers

  • Yep it's not all bad as you say, there will be plenty of half decent VW's to gawp at.
I'm also heading down this weekend for family stuff (Newquay is my home town), weather is looking Ok ish.
    Enjoy.

  • Thanks Pointer.

We're staying at Retorrick Mill, camping so the weather better hold up.

My mate went their last year (and took one of my kids along) and he reckons its the most chilled out place around. My daughter is so excited to be going back and to see Wilf, the owner again - the coolest bloke ever, according to her!

Enjoy the weekend with your family!

  • Steins fish and chip takeaway is definitely worth a visit love monkfish and chips! there a cafe at the top of port isaac that does brilliant crab/lobster sarnies called fresh from the sea (they also catch their own shellfish and sell great fish too) so if you want to cook it yourself then also worth a visit. The harbour restaurant in port isaac was also very very nice when I went there a couple of years ago and more suited to this thread!

    No problem,

It's lovely around Mawgan Porth, Bedruthen Steps is stunning. Have a great weekend.
    Sorry for thread derail!

  • Where did you go in the end?

Thanks for all the veggie options.

  • Not until June 23rd. Booked a table at the Alyn Williams place.

done the same as well for july

  • My bro is unexpectedly in town for a week. He's not a massive foodie, but I feel its a good excuse for a posh meal. I was keen on the Ledbury or Duck and Waffle - but it seems both need a bit more lead time.
Any other ideas? I might take a day off on Tues so could do a nice Michelin stared lunch if we can get in somewhere nice.

  • Lunch shouldn't be an issue? Dinner by Heston is on my hit list. Lunch spots are relatively easy to get.

  • Dinner by Heston is booked. 14th June for lunch

  • Taking my wife to the Hinds Head in bray on friday!

Really looking forward to it, anyone been, and any reccomendations...?
