  • when on merlincycles.co.uk their logo which was different confused me even more, and the fact they sell a range of different bikes.

Would it be accurate to say my bike is like a skate shop releasing a shop board?

  • That makes sense. Thanking you.

  • Merlin stuff is prety decent they always had solid reviews in the mtb mags back in the day. For 20 quid I think you got a pretty good deal

  • Yeah i remember reading good reviews in mbuk back in the day as you said.
That's essentially why i bided on it, not even thinking i'd win at that price.

  • Bought this frame off ebay largely because it was shiny but don't know enough about bikes to satisfy my curiosity about what make/age it is.

The serial is YF831C50630. The heart is on the underside of the down tube.

    Cheers!

Can't seem to add the photos to this post! Grrrr

  • Fella I live with restores old scooters. He was round speaking to another scooter collector tonight and saw a bike the fella had in the back of his car.

70-80's race bike. Guy I live with couldnt remember the full name said something like a "jacques le monde" something like that and that, the fella recognised the series from the teams blue/pink/orange paint scheme.

I might be able to pick this up for next to nothing. I'd like a geared bike to go alongside my fixed gear. only surface rust :)

anyone recognise it? or any suggestions?

  • Anquetil?
    Were/are you all drunk?

  • No not drunk, I'm just hearing details of this via my mate who is into scooters and dont think twigged that it might be worth anything.

I think he said the model sounded like a french name but thought frame was italian.

gonna try and find out more tomorrow.

guy wanted virtually nothing for a complete bike!

  • if its coming up for nothing anyway pick it up and if its shit sell it on, don't think about it, jsut do it.

  • For the money he's talking about im having it. just wanted to see if I could find out a bit more, a race series bike in a blue/pink I just thought would be unusual.

    hopefully more details tomorrow.

lampre? arent their team colours pink/blue?

  • Hey,
I have to say that the frame you purchased isn't that good a quality, the chrome is poor ie the speckles around the seat post and the lines you can observe are from the copper underneath not being polished properly before chroming...
secondly the forks have a cheap pressed steel crown, that would suggest manufacture based on cost and not quality. Also the level of finish on the chrome inside the forks is extremely poor, which also detracts from the overall quality aspect.
The heart on the down tube is to help you position levers for derailleurs, and as such has appeared on numerous frames in the past, if the heart was a cut out in the bottom bracket then the news would have been more cheerful, as this would denote some exotic italian maunfacture.
As it is...I think you have bought a bit of a dog, it's shiny ...but a shiny mongrel.

  • Bought this frame.... because it was shiny

I'd suggest that buying a bike based on its colour, isn't the best thing to do.

I wish you had asked opionions on what frame to buy, based on your budget and personal tastes here first.
Many people on here would have been very helpful. Wingedangel has been a bit harsh, but certainly not dishonest.

Hope it works out for you as you hoped. What sort of build did you have in mind for your shiny frame?

  • Ride it, enjoy it... :]

  • +1

  • It's a first build and it's for fun and education, not awards so as long as it rides in a straight line and isn't overly heavy I'm happy. I didn't pay much for it and wasn't expecting an expensive frame to be lurking under the chrome, just wanted an idea of what I would be riding. If the express aim of this project was anything other than to learn how to build a bike and rediscover my interest in cycling I would certainly have consulted the wisdom of these boards. :)

Think I like the porteur style, GA2G. Still thinking it through but that's what I keep coming back to.

    Cheers teenslain!

  • As it is...I think you have bought a bit of a dog, it's shiny ...but a shiny mongrel.

One man's gas pipe is another man's dream.

As we constantly see with the misguided demands and excitement over Reynolds 531.

So it's going to be a little heavy, so the finish isn't perfect..meh. I'm with teenslain on this.

  • I'm about to buy a used Benotto junior race bike.
However, I'm not so sure if it'a real Benotto.
Top ends of seat stays and fork crown look a bit strange to me, but of course a junior bike may differ from adult bikes. Also, during the years, these details may have changed.
Does someone know where I can see pictures or catalogues of Benotto junior frames / bikes, so I can compare.
I've tried Bulgier, but that looked quite different.

Of course, I know I have to look for things like Italian BB thread, stamped markings in BB shell etc., but it's not so sure if Benotto did that for cheaper frames.
And Benotto stickers have always been available, so these could have been applied to any bike frame.

Anyone interested in buying this bike ?

  • For the record im not trying to rip anyone one off here.

The guy restores mk1 golfs, scooters, chooper bikes as well as road bikes.

He got the bike for cheap as part of a deal on vw bits and is willing to pass on at cost as he has enough project wise to be getting on with and heard I was building a bike.

So I'm not ripping anyone off thanks.
