  • Getting a powder coat soon and I'd really love to work out what the frick this frame was before it was painted so I can try and track some decals!

anyone get any clues? sorry to post here but in the frame ID thread it just gets lost amongst much more easily identifiable things!

  • someone advised me the clue was in the text that denotes the frame geometry angles...?

    Nick

  • Try posting it on retrobike

  • thinking of getting this frame, owner claims it's 953 tubing but know fuck all about how to verify that, looks a decent frame and just wondering if anyone can give me anymore info on it

  • 953 is stainless steel. Is there an unpainted part of the frame? Does it look like stainless? You might have to scrape away some paint to see, but it's common to leave some part of a stainless frame unpainted if only to show it off.

  • dunno I've only ever seen those pictures, from the inner part of the seatube it looks like theres no rust. Anyone have any ideas on the headset, I'm sure a 953 would have a pricy headset

  • anyone ?

  • The angles may help with the lugs but not necessarialy the frame builder. Are there any codes stamped under the bottom bracket?

  • I think he's having you on, how much does he want for it?

They look like the bolt on downtube cable stops, a la this, the horizontal drop outs seem strange too.

  • Yeah the code under the bottom bracket reads 2973. probably user error but this hasn't returned anything for me grom simple google research...

so was it common for framebuilders to buy in lugs instead fo making their own..? I dint know that

  • I picked up this from a guy who came into the shop the other day, he has basically totally ruined it(whatever it was) for some reason he has tried to cut out the bb, rattle can the thing white(terrible job) and the seatpost is stuck, the seat stays say "Columbia" on them and it has "young" stamped into the bb,the dropouts are campy, i spent a while on google and came up with nothing, if anyone has any idea it would be pretty cool to find out what it is/where it came from.oh and it has has canti mounts.

he's after 80 euro, so i'd say your right...... if it seems to good to be true, than it probably is

  • yeah but what 3ttt ... it doesnt look like 3t moscow ...

moscow looks more like a dropped bullhorn, this one is more 'up and up'

even more of a rise than the 3ttt moser

    could it be custom?

  • i've asked the owner he said it was a 3t moscow without any reshaping ..

  • like these?

  • Those are specific and custom for those Takhion frames.. USSR produced..

  • he's after 80 euro, so i'd say your right...... if it seems to good to be true, than it probably is

I agree that the style of the frame appears to predate the introduction of 953. It is a nice looking frame so €80 seems reasonable for a steel frame.

  • I purchased this from lightbluejosh a couple of weeks back here on the forum, and have been trying to identify it...
It has the original forks and campagnolo forkends/trackends & seatlug (27.2mm seatpost) so It's a pretty reasonable bike - possibly continental - likely 531. It has a Gazelle sticker on the seatube and wrapover seatstays so it looks very likely to be an early Gazelle champion

The only issue is the frame number - which I can only make out to be 4339, and Monique at Gazelle say's that's not one of their numbers....
Here's a very dodgy mobilephone photo of the BB showing serial number location

And here's a shot showing the headtube lug and fork crown.

The best match I can find so far is this - but if Gazelle say it's not one of their frame numbers, I can't really argue with that!! I've not checked the steerer - it could be that the 4339 is a rennovation number or something like that.... Or it might be something completely different e.g. Holdsworth Professional or a bertin - but why would anyone stick a gazelle decal on a bertin or holdsworth pro????? curious... any pointers greatfully accepted!

  • My frame says 4330 on the bb!

does your frame have number 72 bocama lugs?

  • Hi Appoloxl - cheers for your posting!!
What frame do you have with the number 4330?
re: Lugs - I'd assumed they were prugnat lugs, but they may be bocama - how do I tell - I guess I'm looking for a BCM Logo on a lug somewhere e.g.

Is that the sort of thing you have? and is your serial number in the same place?
    Cheers
    James

  • is it just the photo angle, me, or is the chainstays joint not straight?

  • I have no idea !

there is a BCM stamped on the lower lug on the headtube and a 72 stamped on the seat cluster lug at the front...

have a look at the frame here: http://www.lfgss.com/post2537627-983.html

  • like these?

i dont know if its really a moscow or not :S

  • try the gazelle thread for good info from people who worked at the gazelle factory frame building back in the day
