Not a bad idea... just despairing a little over the current job market.
Might give some of the upcoming Glugs a go...
You know some folks at Studio Output? A pal of mine used to work there... be funny if you knew him too- Tom? -

Straight away... I'm out... "Digital".
I'm one of those old guys who is only qualified to do that thing called "print".

I've just spent a week doing a print brochure, time i could've spent a lot more efficiently if we knew a good print designer to give it to. Will prob not happen again for a while, but you never know, so perhaps send anyway?

Are you saying.....that there aren't many design jobs at the moment?

Um...is that a typo on the tkmaxx blurb? Ironically next to the spelling app.

See! I pay attention to details! Give me a job! Someone!
I'm actually going to stop taking the piss now as I am about to graduate from a graphic design degree this summer myself and although I've applied to do an MA if I'm unsuccessful I'm going to have to start whoring myself about, so this thread is actually very useful to me.
A question I'd like to ask is how many people here are freelance and how many have permanent jobs/contracts at companies? Also have any of you started your own companies with friends/classmates and made your own collective?
-
• #38
If you want to do an MA, do it now.
^ that's my 2p
-
• #39
I fully intend to, I think it'll help me get an edge over the competition when I do finally attempt to get a job too.
I've only applied to one place though, but I had an interview and I think it went well so fingers cross'd.
-

this only caters to motion graphic and animation jobs but some people might find it helpful
-
• #41
Don't want to be the one to break it to you, but an MA is not going to give you an edge...
-
• #42
Chris, if you can, go freelance. It's a good Market for freelance at the moment!

Well good luck.
I'd love to take some time out to do something like the RCA course. It'd be a real luxury to do that now though.
At graduation I felt like I'd done enough of formal education for the while. Now I would love to get 'thinking' again.

haha, that's quite embarrasing, i'll fix it tomorrow. cheers for the heads up!

The words on the CV mean nothing.
But actually pushing ideas that much further? You never get to do that in industry (unless you work for KesselsKramer I guess). It shows in what you do after.

Yeah it's the RCA course that I've applied to. Communication Art and Design. It's not just any MA course, it's an RCA MA course, pow. Surely that counts for something?
I'm just finishing up at CSM, and while a lot of my friends are relieved that they can finally leave and go straight into practice I don't feel like I've been academically challenged enough yet, and I don't want to leave education until I have. It's only in the last 6 months or so that I've realised the kind of work that I'm best at doing, so to have another 2 years to develop that into something solid and unique would be invaluable.
-
• #47
You memorised that didn't you?
-
• #48
Hmmm, I think industry experience will always allow you to grow your ways of thinking, an MA may give you more time to explore your own design ideas but practical application and getting the most out of client briefs, you learn that in a studio.
-
• #49
Yeah....totally just regurgitated some of my personal statement. I've thought about it so much that these sentences are etched into my brain!

We had a work experience guy who just graduated from CSM - i made him cut letters out of paper with a pair of scissors, screw them up, flatten them out, then scan them in and re-trace them. all day long. for a month.
^ I've been to a few + know some people at Output
Think it'd be a good idea to go and just check it out, try to talk to a few people and tell them what you do. Can't do any harm, and worst case you get inspired by the talks?
