You're better off avoiding agencies and looking at the design blog's jobs section, the best jobs don't go to agencies:
It's Nice That, FormFiftyFive, YCN, Etc

I crossed purple off my agency list a good while ago. I know recruiters will always be recruiters, but they are worse than most in my experience
I also keep getting emails from someone at ma-worldwide about jobs, i always ask where they got my details from, never hear back...

Yeah I've had a couple of calls from Purple, but they've both been when I'm in a job.

Thanks for these btw... just adding our job to a couple of those blog links earlier.
We so badly need a really great designer. It hurts.

Ive had both good and bad experience with recruiters, some of them are shit, some of them are actually pretty good. I think with recruiters it depends on your level, if youre a junior like myself they can be a big help in getting your foot in the door with good agencies.
@Kboy Can I ask what was wrong with purple? Im with them at the minute and theyve been pretty good, but thats just my experience so far. While were on the subject, does anyone here go to Glug? I went to the last one and it was pretty cool, would be good to have some people to look out for next time round though.

clockwork - don't want to tell here as I think the experience will be different for everyone. This was also years ago so they might've bettered themselves. I'm a bit stubborn though... will pm you

Fair enough kboy, Im just curious, like I said theyve been good with me, not really fair to give them bad press on a public forum.

completely agree, no reason not to talk to them just cause I had a bad run in with them. Have a word with them and make your own mind up

I work for a design related company (Interior design and Furniture Design) and steer clear of recruiting agencies, (they charge huge fee's to potential employers). So we only use them when we are desperate but my company advertises on dezeem.com and linkedin.com as well as in certain press Icon, Blueprint etc. but most of all we rely on word of mouth, ask around with other companies people in the industry.
What kind of design job are you looking for? as design can be so broad.

Re looking for jobs I reckon sending emails out straight to companies / studios is a good idea.
There's so many factors that come in to play when when it comes to looking for a job. Timing, position, chemistry, money etc etc. So write a good short email, do a good portfolio, and get emailing. Make sure you email the right person though if you can, if you can get a contact through a friend that's worth loads
And like digby said, it costs a fortune to hire someone through a recruiter so if they can be avoided they should.

Nearly all of the jobs I have had have come through word of mouth . . .

+1 word of mouth
good design agencies get tons of emails daily, send them something nice in the post!

Im getting a bit fed up of recruiters right now. Was supposed to be having interview this week but now the guy whos been arranging stuff for me has gone on holiday without even bothering to tell me.
With that in mind, does anyone here work for or know anyone at any decent digital agencies? Im looking for a flash design / development position, Ive got a years agency experience as well as freelance experience.
Theres is a beer or three in it for anyone that can help me out. -

Cheers everyone that posted links on here.
I've ended up getting a job through an agency (digital gurus) working as an iPhone/iPad app designer.
It's temporary at the moment on a full time freelance basis but could well be turning into a permanent position, at least I hope so. -

I'm going to give this a bump... I can't even get representation from a few of these agencies, it's hell out there... Someone mentioned Glug, anyone have any experiences of those events?
Noticed there are a few designer types on here, I lost all my bookmarks without backing up and can't remember all the sites with design jobs advertised.
Anyone got any links?
Cheers.
