  • Thanks - i'll ask them to confirm a couple of the items

  • You charge double for a frame / stem pin? Rear hinge takes less take and requires cheaper tooling?

  • We charge £25 for a rear hinge, plus parts.

  • that 50 was including parts so only a 5er more

  • You have P&P, we dont... ;)

  • @R.Hobbs whats the best Brompton electric conversion kit? My mum's eBrompton has gone wrong for the 6-7th time in 6 months. She has been without the bike longer than she has had it so Brompton is giving her a refund.

Due to poor health, she needs an e-bike so I'd like to convert her old M6L Superlight. Swytch seems to be the most popular but I am concerned about reports of the fork/hinge failing. She is tiny 5'1" 50kg and will only be riding it along the canal (flat) a couple of times a month. Any recommendations?

  • What’s going on with her electric?

I don’t give approval to any aftermarket kits, the stock parts are just not set up for them. Maybe if you swapped the fork to a Kinetics, used an electric brom stem etc

  • @Hobo Check out the Brompton kits made by Grin technologies- the progress that they're making with electric vehicles is amazing. They do a torque sensing bottom bracket (similar to the Brompton set up), which combined with their proportional torque controller really makes the difference from the cruder feeling kits.

I rode around on a stupidly powerful e-brompton for ages and nothing broke.

  • I recall when @r.hobbs asked about the electric Brompton:

You ridden an electric Brompton? We have one and think it’s great. What don’t you like?

It doesn't fucking work as much as it should. For the price point and the fact that Brompton had been developing it for 14 years...you would think they would produce a reliable e-bike thats not a boat anchor (17kg).

Owned one, it was ok. The fact that it failed and went back 12 times meant retailer took it back. Brompton employees (and their mechanics at the junction stores) who I know and I am regularly instructed by, confirm its shit.

Get a swytch kit or whatever it is called and get Ben at Kinetics to build a better fork - Ben ,unlike, Brompton, designs things that have stood the course of time.

OR get a retailer refund if still possible (I recall you worked at Cycle Surgery at some point so hope you bought elsewhere!) and buy a reputable ebike by a reputable ebike builder

    Love to mum!

  • +1 I'll have Kinetics to get it set up.

-1 I won't get the Swytch kit, the liability is on the installer.

IF needs must: Best to speak to Ben at Kinetics about his options, he's a sound guy and knows his stuff.

  • The battery repeatedly failed. Then the the connection pointed failed, then the motor failed. Then the motor would randomly kick in when she wasn’t pedalling.

She has always had a Brompton (she still has her original from the early 80’s) hence being an early adopter for the eBrompton. I’ll message Ben and see what he suggests.

  • Fair enough!

Haven’t experienced issues so much as that.

Pendix is brilliant, just a shame you have the battery on the toptube... or is it?!

  • Where would be best to enquire to "pre-order" a Brompton for when they're next available? Looking to buy an orange M6L for my partner with a C2W voucher

  • Can provide now... ryan@sjscycles.com

  • Great, pinged you

  • On the off chance does anyone have a rear triangle they no longer want. Any colour and condition.

  • I have multiple... and forks! And other stuff... please buy everything so I can buy a van...

  • I need the cheapest rear triangle you have kind sir.

  • Quite a long time ago I was asking about tire sealant for the new (then) Schwalbe Kojaks. I bought the Finish Line sealant, put it into the tubes and completely forgot about it.

Today, the GF and I rode into work for the first time since lockdown on the Bromptons. Just before we were about to leave her valve sort of blew out. It looked like the rubber sleeve had come away from the metal section of the valve. And now, about 6hrs later, one of mine has just popped!

Is this crazy coincidence, or do tubes have a finite lifespan with sealant? And would this be within hours, after installing 18months who?

  • Sounds coincidental... but that valve looks like its been fitting wonky?

  • @R.hobbs With regards to the Conti Brompton tyres that got recalled, is there a specific model number that differentiates them from the re-released ones? I got some 'new' ones from SJS, but the rear one still rubs like a b*stard.

  • When did you order? Where is it rubbing?

Maybe send me a photo to ryan@sjscycles.com ?

  • It’s mostly where the mudguard meets the bottom bracket. I’ve managed to bend the mudguard stands away from the rest of the tyre, so it’s just that one contact point now. Bought them mid-may, when I believed the issue had been solved. Unless it’s an issue because mine’s an older SWB model?

  • Nice rims!

Is the mudguard sitting on top of the bridge?

    Ta!

  • Thanks, it's for my ongoing fixed project...

The mudguard is tucked in between the chainstays, but if I pull it out, the problem area just shifts to the brake bridge, where there's nothing I can do to give it any more space. The only way I've managed to reduce the rubbing is by lifting the wheel in the dropouts just a touch, but obviously then it's not a perfectly snug mount.
