  • Ed, now that I'm there, you cannot use the mind rubber to erase me.
Besides, where is your sense of adventure?
    ;-)

  • That looks just like my old flat. Limehouse?

  • Might try to get me some of that Brompton mechanic training, at £45/hr it sounds like a proper wheeze.

  • A drillum Brompton sounds like a cheap way of making the thing lighter, I'll wait until you've done yours first, Jurek, thobut.

  • I will do that on my new one.

Any way of dealing with an old knackered one?

  • I noticed wear in my hinge after just six months. 18 months and approx 2,600 miles later it's exactly the same. Has anyone bought a Brompton new and checked the hinge immediately?

    #justsayin

  • As edscoble says here its a normal wearing part, as is the seat sleeve.

I have seen people do them to fucked in a few months and a few years..

I charge £20 parts £20 labour down in somerset - its a job I have done soo many times it does not take long at all.

  • new build in taunton!

  • I have 60 sat beside me I have checked... a tiny bit of play is fine, same with the frame pivots.

  • Well, this is all good to know.

If I get these replaced frequently, is there a limit to the number of times it can be done, or doesn't it affect the steel bore of the hinge assembly in the frame ?

  • No limit I have found, as long as you dont let the play get too greater / the mechanic does it correctly.

  • "....as long as.........../ the mechanic does it correctly"

    There's the rub.

  • just go to premier dealers ...

  • While we're at it, is there any other critical part, apart from the obvious bike maintenance things, that I need to keep an eye on ?

  • Rear hinge, seat sleeve and the standard chain wear, brake pads / rims - try and keep your rims as clean as possible and change pads at 2/3rd worn.

The front wheel / headset are looseball, so keep those clean / tidy or upgrade to sealed bearings for a little extra cost but higher performance and longer lasting etc.

The tyre pressures make a huge difference, 100psi every week!

  • ok @maynardeames

Ive been blasting around with 1 brake for weeks now - what do i need to do to put this new front brake on my brompton?

  • :') wait for Amey to deliver the bolts im posting with his new B, I am rushing around like a mad man to get it sorted, hopefully it will leave here friday and arrive on Monday, sorry for the delay, at least you can do some skids!

  • haha im going to need a bastard new rear kojak! forgotten how hard it is to keep the rear planted and stop without a front brake, let alone whip out my brompton trackstand tekkers!

  • I might have a spare, if so ill throw it in the box for you!

  • I have these and an MTB HTII BB. Let the magic happen.

  • The main hinge can only be changed twice but it rarely ever needed and I only came across one from an old Brompton from 1998.

The rear triangle hinge, I lost count, but there have been cases where customer abused their so much it need a whol new rear triangle, and some even the frame and triangle.
