  • I've just noticed that on my less than 2 yo 2SLU Ti, that when the front wheel is dead straight on, the bars are pointing ever so slightly to the left - maybe as little as 2 or 3 °
Am I right in thinking that this can be adjusted our by loosening the locknut on the headset, rotating the fork a smidge, and then re-tightening the locknut?
The more I think about it, the more I think not, and am probably better off leaving well alone as all I'll be able to achieve is the front wheel being at 90° to the bars, but pointing ever so slightly to the left.
Probably a bit too late to be taking it back to Chris Compton and saying somebody's jig was a bit squiffy when they were wielding the torch.
    What do others think?

  • It's a quill stem.

  • So when I undo the handlebar fold clamp, and loosen the bolt head I see within the clamp, I should be able to rotate it a smidge. Yes?

  • You got it down to a T.

  • Gracias, Amigo.

  • Yeah but think of the sheer fear you experience on a Brompton as you reach 30mph downhill on your way to the station with those small wheels crashing through potholes and catching manhole edges making it twitch.

Was thinking of this post as I neared white-knuckle terminal velocity down the helter-skelter final decent into Kentfordshire Commuterville Central this morning when my natty new hat blew off and was run over by several following cars. Could have been worse but I swear at one fucker did it on purpose as I stood by the side of the busy road waving my arms about and trying to retrieve it.

It was on my way up this same hideous corkscrew for the first time last week, grinding away in the lowest gear with my knees under my elbows, that some helpful local character leaned out of the window of a battered and angrily passing Ford Mondeo and shouted "Get on the fackin parff!" before flicking a lit cigarette at me. Oh how I love my (thank fuck temporary) new home.

Nipping out to pick up an extended seat post at lunch. It is a simple matter of taking the saddle clamp off and letting the old one drop though the frame?

  • Yes.

  • a lit cigarette?

thats nasty person, i would have loved for the driver to have got to the next junction and seen a queue of traffic in front of them - nowhere to run. hope your week is hassle free.

  • Meh. They missed. Thanks both.

PS. My hat (new cashemere baker boy from Laird & Co) seems unharmed. I win.

  • Recommendations for a front light that'll attach to my handlebar accessory bracket please?

    Ignore the Garmin mount...

  • Just got a carradice Super C with the SQR fitment courtesy of @StreetE, really happy with the results. Cant even see myself riding a normal road bike, Im a complete convert at the moment. Proper commuting bike this is. Crazy as it sounds, im thinking of modding it.

Feels really bouncy at the moment so might get one of those firmer shocks that go on the rear triangle. Anybody have any experience swapping this to something else? Has it changed the way it rides? Thinking of changing the levers as well to something more compact, closer to the bars as i find myself sometimes trying to reach for the levers, maybe i just have short fingers >.>

About to order some quick release pedals with straps, not going clipless on this as I dont want to keep changing shoes when im commuting to work. Any recommendations? Found some EZY pedals but just wondering if there are any other options out there.

  • Crazy as it sounds, im thinking of modding it.

change the shock , the pedals and maybe a couple of other bits ...........not crazy at all really :-)

  • Yeh, been checking that thread, not sure how I feel about changing the cranks. Sounds like more trouble for me at the moment. Current brompton cranks seems ok, if I were to change it, it'll only be for the looks.

  • Cranks are fine, definitely change the shock for a firmer one.

Lastly, get the mechanic to fit that seatpost height adjuster that come with it, make it easier pulling the seatpost up to the correct height every time

  • Thats possible? I always had to faffle around the seatpost height everytime i unfold it >.>

  • I just use a piece of gorilla tape around the post to stop the post at the correct height.

What are the options for aftermarket clamps now that brompfication is no longer going. A few alternatives seem to be knocking around but they're all titanium and hence pretty pricey (£60+).

  • It come with all the Brompton, but I think a lots of mechanic threw them away not realising it's an actual component.

  • I use a Hope QR on mine. It did require machining some custom parts though.

  • Oh noes!
Since when are brompfication no more?
Looks like I may've thrown my hard earned at them, earlier this year, just in time.

  • Cheers but I was thinking more of the hinge clamps than seatpost.

Not sure when he closed up shop, seems he's moved back to Holland.

  • Try rockbros or other sellers of sprung clamps on the bay

  • Cheers, the sjs ones are a bit pricey. The rockbros ones are titanium so pricey too.

  • Leyzne micro drive usb rechargable, they have a nice easy on/off mount for front and rear.

  • I use a Garmin 500. I accept that this is possibly overkill, but I need something that can talk to the power meter...

  • is there actually such a thing as a wireless comp that doesn't go nuts when you switch your front light on? I tried 3 models from 3 manufacturers (including one that specifically claimed to avoid this problem) before giving up as they all immediately had me travelling at 0mph or 40mph as soon as my light was switched on!

Much as I hate to throw more money at Garmin I'd go for an Edge 20 for this purpose I think..
