Brompton owners

The best use I've found for it is storing the car keys if I'm out cycling with my son, but the saddle bag is more useful.

I thought it would be ideal for carrying inner tubes. I keep a spare inner tube in every bag I commute with (backpacks, mussette-messenger and Brommie bag) and would rather it's on the bike. Not too keen on a saddle bag.

You can also keep one inside the frame :)

I've seen that trick. I saw a guy using cling film and talc, which looked like a faff, but if it works I guess?

A bit of wire/string to pull it out works fine.

I keep an inner tube inside the frame. Pokes in quite easily but could probably use a stick to help if needed. The tube is slightly powdered from the factory I guess. I then leave the valve sticking out ever so slightly to grab and retrieve. Doesn’t interfere with the toolkit either

Tie a piece of wire to your inner tube. Stuff it in the mainframe with the end of the wire poking towards the opening.

Bonus-tip: folding the bike makes access to the inside of the main frame much easier.

Okay I think I get the point in the wire now. I'll try the cling film method first.

EDIT: 5 mins later and job done. Can't believe how quick and simple of a hack that is. Why did I ignore it all these years? The clingfilm makes the tube nice and compressed and allows the tube to slide in/out of the frame very easily.

If you use a Brompton for everything, you can tune your everyday carry. I keep an inner tube, a small phone cable, a tenner, and a small foil emergency blanket in the frame, in addition to the expensive but brilliantly designed tool kit. Adds a bit of weight but it addresses a lot of bike-related risks.

Indeed. I travel to the office less now, but it was my go to bike for most commutes. The toolkit is wonderful - cost off-set as the wife bought it for me as a gift. On my very first ride out with it, one of my EZY wheels came loose while cycling down the Euston Rd 'tunnel'. Most timely gift ever.

On my Brompton I always have lights (fitted in place of the reflectors), the newer Lezyne pump, the toolkit and now an inner tube. Good shout about USB cables - just last Thursday I took a poorly fitting USB micro cable for some backup lights for another bike, but the poor fit meant I couldn't charge them. I might chuck a decent cable in with the inner tube too.

In have a new unused 2024 suspension block to sell for £5 (+postage) if anyone wants to upgrade their old suspension block.

Which one did you go for in the end? Fitted my Joseph Kuosac yesterday and went for a super brief test ride. So far I prefer it.

I did notice the Brompton suspension block is definitely more squidgy than the JK. I threw out my really old, firm suspension block, so couldn't do a comparison with that one.

Edit: Lies. I remember where I put it. Didn't throw it out in the end!

Any experience here with a Kinetics type mod of a Brompton to larger wheel size? Sounds like should be more stable and comfortable?

It's also odd (to me) that offering more than one wheel size isn't a thing for Brompton as a way to sell more bikes , given the build quality i don't anticipate needing to replace my current one but would be tempted to buy another or replace it for a slightly larger fold if there were comfort benefits. Does anyone know the history of why they went with that wheel size?

It's the same as the rear wheel on a Bickerton Portable, which was the inspiration.

If you're not too bothered about the size of the folded package there are countless other manufacturers who will sell you something.

Exactly this, if it wasn’t for the tiny folded footprint there’s no way I’d have one.

I have kinetics conversion brompton but standard 16" wheels, what do you need to know?

I’ve got a 16” disk version from Kinetics (same as Amey) and rate it for utility. Larger wheels always feel a compromise on fold size, given I bought a Brompton for smallest package for travel rather than necessarily best ride (but it along with the cargo is my most used bike)
