  • Unintended consequence of fitting the rear rack, Brompton now slides and crashes around when taking the train and leaving it by the doors. Need to remember to drop the seatpost all the way down to anchor it.

  • How many teeth are usually on the front for a 3-speed brompton, does this vary?

I inherited a 50t crankarm and am thinking of swapping (it has 44t currently which is just a bit too spinny) — I assume I’m going to have to get a new chain? would any 3/32" chain do?

If I then moved to a 46/48 — would I need a new chain again?

I’m not entirely sure what I need so I want to have some flexibility.

  • Much better! Now trim the guard to in between the two holes and fit a rear guard flap; or you can add another hole with a second front flap!

Any particular reason for trimming the guard? I found this in my parts bin. Would it do the job?

  • 5oT is stock, 44T is reduced gearing (-14%).
Any 3/32 chain will work; or, if you go back to 50T you can buy the Brompton chain with the correct number of links.
Running 44T & 3 speed on my Brompton here!

  • 50t is good, with a 14t on the back I’m a fan off. New chain yes.

  • Mainly aesthetically, sometimes the guard can “bounce”
    And snap off

  • the 100 links one?

edit: another q, will the BSR 3-spd hub work with the sturmey archer thumb shifters, looking to get something a lot less clunkier than the original.

  • So I'm checked in at eurostar, all got through OK with that ikea bag no issues and waiting to board. The bag was barely big enough to fit though, don't know if it was user error but couldn't quite get it to close fully and the zip pulled away a bit in trying, so it's touch and go 😂

Will be worth it when I'm cruising the streets of Paris in a few hours mind 😁

  • You didn't remove the drive side pedal RIGHT?

  • Those 90 degree valve adapters - are they better than the Topeak ones?

I usually need several attempts to get the Topeak one to allow air through, it’s almost as big a PITA as not having an adapter.

  • Yep, been using one for ages for kids bikes and buggy’s etc, never had an issue!

  • 100l for 50/14, 98 for 13t.

You need a Sturmey sls30; I’m currently out but sure sjs have them

  • cheers!

SJS is out of sls30 too. Preordered it on Triton but est ship date is 30/11!

is the number of links as simple as 48T = 100-2 ... or is the link math more complicated than that?

  • I haven’t worked out any math as such; just experience.

    48x13 98l; 48x14 100l

You can happily run 50x13 on 100l so I’d do that while your changing around to find what works

Can also upgrade the hub to take 2/3 sprockets if needed

  • Never occurred to me to get one of these before. Ordered.

  • Really bloody handy! Thanks!

  • I have a standard rack going spare if anyone wants it? PM me if so

    Edit: some dibs

  • Hi brompton users .
I'm looking a cheap or used bag that's compatible with the front block

  • I just got my bag off AliExpress ( https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001265692575.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.21ef1802WaRz0A ), cost around 1/3 of the official bags.

Initial impressions are it's not bad, certainly less quality than the official, but stitching and zips are solid. It's made of nylon more equivalent to a cheap backpack or something, but during my commute this morning it bucketed down and the contents were still dry inside despite me not faffing around with the rain cover. A solid 3.5/5 I would have bought a used bag but here in Australia they seem pretty rare.

  • What lube are we using on seatposts?
Everything seems too much and the seat moves

    Grease tiny dab
GT85 on a rag wiped sparingly
    Green oil dab

  • Lube? None!!

Clean with isopropyl alcohol and leave it!
