  • I turned the wheels around so that they don't grab at your ankles as much. Much better and free.

Totally doing this when I get home, have some rep.

  • I just found the MKS Urban Step-In EZY pedals on hubjub for £45:

These are quick release pedals which are flat on one side and Time ATAC on the other; absolutely ideal for the Brompton. They are hard to find and normally retail around £90. I just snapped up a pair.

  • I also need to post these here so I don't forget about them:

    Minivelo EZY pedal holder: http://www.ssung2shop.com/shop/goods/goods_view.php?&goodsno=186788525&category=019005003

Both discovered on this page of awesome Brompton goodies: http://www.bromptonforum.net/t4921-54620443975064049436-4463651677-510604829253944-coree-et-brompton

  • Fuuuuuu ordered them two days ago for twice the price !
Luckily they weren't in stock so are still on order - trying to cancel now!
    Thanks for the headsup

  • ^^^ Dom repped. I've been after some of those for ages but the full price is eyewatering.

  • clefty, did you order from Tredz? They are notorious for advertising stock they don't have. That is half the reason I didn't buy these sooner. (The other half being the eyewatering price, as miro said!)

Anyway, glad I could help. I'm looking forward to receiving them.

Nah from Cyclestore, who although they said they were in stock - weren't - but they emailed me pretty quickly to apologise and said they'd be in, in the next couple of days - which was to my advantage as they were literally about to send them out today. They couldn't obviously match the price as it's lower than their buy price, but were very understanding and refunded me straight away - so now I have the hubjub ones on order. Rep all round really!

  • Can we not find someone to slag off? This is the internet after all.

  • the hubjub ones are out of stock fuuuuuuuuuu

    hmm black £65ish silver £88

Silver would be more in keeping with the aesthetics of my bike

  • Cyclestore have a spare pair in stock now - albeit at £90 ;-)

  • Out of curiosity, for what purpose are you forumers using your Bromptons for? And what kind of distance are you doing?

I'm use mine for a ~10 mile round commute as there is nowhere to lockup a bike at work (so I just pop it under my desk).

  • Mine started out as a bike to take on holiday. Now since I live further out and MOC has stolen my Surly for his commute (Yes you heard right MOC is RIDING to work - only took me 6 years) It's my main steed.

At the moment I do about 10 miles a day on it and take the train the rest, I wouldn't want to do more on a 2 speed though tbh. I do everything from Tesco shopping to trips to Screwfix in Acton to buy large spanners - Screwfix are cool, they let me bring the brompton in.

  • I use mine to do my ~8 mile a day commute and mine lives under my desk too. I have been in all types of shops and restaurants with mine and not one place has had a problem yet. Love it!

  • Mine is used primarily for my 8 mile a day commute, but also get taken to the supermarket for most shops, and I recently went on a canal boat for a week where it lived in the shower and. Took me on adventures when I got bored.

The furthest I've done is about 20 miles in one hit, and as long as I was in no rush I could see myself doing 30-40 miles on it quite happily.

  • So the sweet spot seems to be a 3-6 mile journey.

I use mine to connect dots and make journeys by bike that I might not otherwise have done. Basically, running around central London to meetings, and commuting by train and doing a 2 mile each way commute to and from the office.

There's also no cycle parking at work (that I would trust my nice bikes to), though there is secure parking 250m from the new office. Thinking of getting a lower priced Surly for commuting as the Brompton isn't so good when I do the 15 mile each way full commute.

Somewhere around mile 8-9 the Brompton starts to be a bit tiring and uncomfortable.

  • I use mine for a 2 mile commute, but I go there and back twice a day, so 8 miles/day.

Although we do have bike racks outside the office, being able to park the bike under the desk is so much more reassuring.

Also, it's astonishing how quickly, and smoothly, a bike with full mudguards can be packed down into a package so small and portable, and that is what really won me over with the Brompton.

If I were to get a second, though, I'd think twice about the SA hub... For my commute, singlespeed would be more than ample.

  • I have a singlespeed - I bought it for rehab purposes, actually. I couldn't bend my knee very well after the first of the two ops, so the fact it was so very low meant that it was much easier to start with, and the cycling did wonders for regaining mobility.

Now I generally use it for short hops where I don't want to faff around with a full bike, especially if I'm just meeting someone locally. Sometimes I commute on it, but I have secure storage at work so I often use a full bike.

  • Furthest I've done it probably 25 miles from Diksmuide to Brugge - but that was flat as a pancake and at a lesuirely pace. I'm feeling a bit slow on mine at the moment, feel like i could do with an extra high gear as I keep spinning out on the flat.

I'm contemplating either getting a 6 speed wheel, so I can use it for hills on holiday - or just changing the 2 speed gearing. I'm on standard at the moment (not actually sure what that is) The spinny gear is fine, but could do with something a bit faster on the top gear.

  • I'm on an S2L and use it on the days I don't do the full commute to work (14 miles each way). I use it for a mile to the station at this end and 1.5 miles at the other end to the office. My favourite thing is that if I leave my desk bang on time I can get an earlier train home, giving myself a bit of extra time for myself every night and that's bloody lovely.

  • Another S2L doing 4 miles each way three days a week from Clapham to Blackfriars then around Balham and Regents Park for the other two days.

The tiny folded down size is the only sanity saving option since moving into a top floor flat a few months ago.

Its great being able to take it on the train back out to the countryside of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire to visit the family.

  • My S2L does an occasional 10 mile commute but comes into it's own when things get social after work and the tube is the best solution for the return journey.

Also the handiest local transport - so much so that I gave my 'pub bike' away.

It was great on a family trip to Manchester last week - took the bike with me and escaped the inlaw mayhem to explore the area.

  • Mine has become my default "it's raining" bike due to the effectiveness of the mudguards and brakes. It's also extremely good in the snow.
I have done 10-15 miles on it a few times, but I wouldn't like to every day as the smaller wheels mean you work harder (less gyroscopic effect, less momentum). More usually it's under 4 miles, for which it's fine.
It's great for taking to places on the train and riding out into the countryside. I've taken mine to Shropshire and Lincolnshire.
