  • Had cycle training with Will today, very helpful and would recommend him to any commuter especially if you are not so confident on the roads, and to those who are as its good to be reassured that you're doing a good job and be shown what to how to do things better, i had an awesome time, only fell over twice ha. once while getting on my bike. But had very good company (will) a cup of tea a pie from Dunns for later. good times.

  • Thanks Yasi, it was a pleasure.
I'm saving my pie for dinner.

  • what no custard?

    i've scoffed mine already, nom.

  • In Wills case its tea, in mine its Latte, munchies optional.

  • strangely fausto and I were teaching in a school in Stretham today where we discovered Kennedy's pie shop.

Mine was a Cornish pasty and his a steak pie.

One of the joys of teaching at different schools is trying out the local cuisine. First rule of road surveys- find the luncheon venue then the rest will look after itself

  • I am heating up my pie now, sipping Merlot, genning up on ITOs.

  • hold on

  • either its frugality or youre now earning too much...
have you swapped the daytime tea for merlot all the time? could get messy

  • In the past, it was custard, not long ago was a lots of teas and now Merlot?

    What's next? smoothie?

  • I've got a 2 hour cycle training session with Evans booked on Sunday morning and kind of apprehensive that I'm going to be told I'm a bit of a shit cyclist!

Have been cycling in London for years now and have had a couple of accidents (that I'd like to think weren't my fault...) but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to learn, eh?

  • We all have stuff to learn. And cycle training isn't just about what you can do better, it can also be about affirming what you do well.
Be sure to let your instructor know what you want from the lesson, why it is you are having training.

  • either its frugality or youre now earning too much...

A couple of bottles of Merlot and suddenly I'm George Soros.

  • 1 beer and blokes would consider it
2+ beers and they'd pay for it

    3+ beers and they'd do him :-o

  • Another +1 for recommending cycle training...my daft fears of being told I'm a shit cyclist were totally unfounded. And like others have said, I've been cycling for most of my life and cycling in traffic from a pretty early age but I still learnt loads but fairly straightforward, obvious stuff that is just good common sense. Unless you've ever had training though, I guess you just pick up habits from people who taught you to ride, from other cyclists etc?

But yeah, highly recommended - taught at a good pace, by a couple of very nice, well informed guys...kept meaning to ask if one was on here but was horribly hungover and mostly trying to concentrate on not wobbling around too much!

went back today without G as i had no time for making sambos this morning - chips and onion gravy only, no pie. it's pretty good. no cute foldup bike girl crossing the road afterwards though :-(

Next week we can try the posh shop across the road perhaps...

  • I've accidentally become an untrained cycle instructor! Jenny J and I have been working on a colleague (read: steamrolling) to get her to commute via cycling; we got her to ride home from work yesterday and to ride to work this morning. I picked her up from her flat and let her pick the route - she'd bought her own A-Z! So proud. We discovered quickly that some routes are better than others. It was really fun, stopping to show her how to negotiate a roundabout, reminding her to look, signal, maneuver, etc. etc. She told me, before we'd even set off, that she wanted her own bike now (she's borrowing JJ's) and arrived at work super pumped and shocked that she'd made it before 0900! I must confess to hoping to have a commute partner.

  • Bravo!

Good stuff. The world needs more of this.

  • Right... Many years of cycling in London and yesterday I finally decided to schedule training via Bikeworks. Going from their shiny new HQ on Cambridge Heath Road next Tuesday. Fingers crossed I get one of this forums many trainers (I believe some of you chaps and chapesses work out of that one do you not?) to iron out my by now well ingrained kinks. I'll report back once I've done some or all of my sessions. Mrs Wrongcog is going to do it too. She's pretty much a novice having not been on two wheels for absolutely ages. The comparison will be interesting...

  • Looking forward to hearing your experiences.

  • ^ So I had my first session and apparently my last... We covered what would be covered with an absolute beginner in the first two sessions in about 45 mins. The trainer was really nice and calm and gathered pretty quickly that I had a fair bit of experience. Generally I think she felt that I had it all covered and she didn't really see the need for us to do a 2nd or 3rd session. I asked a few questions and we talked a bit about the politics of primary position and cycle lanes. I got the feeling that she was nervous as she felt that there wasn't much we could cover that I was in obvious need of. I was also a bit quick for her on the road. Although having done a few streets and junctions she pretty much said 'you're good to go'...

My feedback: I still think that Mrs Wrongcog should go do it. But I definitely feel that there should be a more intuitive system for booking and orgaising the sessions so that a more experienced cyclist be paired with someone who can get them out into major traffic at a decent speed and deal with any issues out there. I think that today the trainer wasn't comfortable with that stuff necessarily. She'd be wicked with kids and so on, she was properly friendly and chatty. Had all the basic bike handling stuff down, but beyond that the session petered out. Which is a shame as i needed something a bit more advanced I guess.

  • Wrongcog - book in a "personal" session with Wiganwill.
It may cost you real money but it will be worth it.
