  • The rain has given everything a bit of a boost. Looking fairly lush everywhere.

  • Brocc has bolted, as per. Managed to get one head this year at least, it’s usually 100% failure

  • All our broccoli got merked by slugs before it got started. The one that clung on bolted. Might not even bother next year.

  • I gave up on broccoli / lettuce / kohlrabi / other slug food this year and planted the unknown dahlia tubers I bought in a cardboard off a link here instead.

Impressive display of dahlias and cosmos, loads of cut flowers for the house as well. Onions did well though.

  • My broccoli is doing alright, although one plant has produced no heads and is all just leaves. I've given up on Pak Choi, either gets eaten by snails or bolts after it gets a couple of inches high.

My unknown dahlias are doing great too.

  • Deffo a good year for dahlias and butterflies. And runner beans if my glut is anything to go by. Pumpkin is pumping and my neighbour won the scarecrow competition (again) with her new entry ‘Tour De Tring’.

  • Was feeling a bit bummed out by lack of time/resources for the plot recently so went down for the last hour of light to lay a few more slabs to edge the path. Lifted a few things for a personal boost. Pumpkin leaves have pretty much died off from mildew so I'll be eating all those soon if this is any good. Can't remember what variety it is. Predictably got marrows, courgette are definitely on their last legs to. Plus side is it should free up some space for the Crown Prince which have finally taken off. Corn still looking piss weak compared to other people's, though they do have small husks.

Gotta say I do consider jacking it in a couple of times a week, but then I get dreaming about warm evenings down there with my son when he's old enough to not just want to run off/trample on plants.

  • Nice little mixed bag today.
Also whacked a load of carrot, rocket and spring onion seeds to fill in where we’ve harvested already. Don’t think we’ve ever bothered with second crops before so feel quite pleased about getting that done.

  • Impressed your toms are already ripe, enjoy.

  • Only a few but there’s plenty on their way. Think we’ll be flush with beans again in a few days.
I like this period where you can harvest enough for tea instead of ending up with a fuckton of one thing in particular.

  • Ditto. Plenty of tomatoes on my plants but the dreich weather means none of them are ripening yet.

  • I’m getting ready to clip the leaves on my tomato plants for a third time. They’ve gone crazy.

  • That’s nuts, did you give them a pure nitrogen feed or something?!!

  • Just regular tomato feed once per week. Nothing crazy

  • What’s with the harvesting corn early? Is it ready now? Tassels don’t look like they’ve gone brown.

  • Yeah you’re right, I got a bit keen because we had a BBQ invite today and I wanted the humble brag of bringing my own corn. They postponed because of the rain so I’m a double twat. I’ll still eat it though!

  • Gotcha. Impressed you’ve got any cobs at all in July. I’ll be happy with some by September.

  • This might be a bit of a long shot but does anybody know what the deal is with Brixton Windmill Allotments? It's on land owned by Thames Water and I've been punted around to half a dozen people there while trying to (unsuccessfully so far) apply for a plot.

  • The interweb says there is an address;

Thames Water Property Services Ltd, Clearwater Court, Vastern Road, Reading RG1 8DB

Must be old skool maybe drop them a letter of interest

  • In other news I’ve acquired a petrol strimmer

  • Chucked 20 leeks in today.

    I’ve acquired a petrol strimmer

I got a cordless Makita, novelty hasn't worn off yet. Also a bale of straw and 800l of woodchip to finish mulching

  • Cheeky little salad all from the plot today.
Tom, strawb, pickled onion and cuc, basil and chives.
Picking enough for dinner is so much more preferable to harvesting tons at once.

  • Here's a cross section of one of my chioggia. Also paler slices with Lettuce & icicle radish as 100% allotment grown 'salad' too. Not best pics.
