mini hell of the north, riding fixed solo, stunning weather.. a couple of hellos with villa ru and mikey before diving back into town for dad duties and making salmon tikka masala, peshwari rice, plantain and watching epic Paris-Roubaix

  • Got the PX feeling comfy, hour of power out to Henley.

  • 67km and 3600ft...

    .....this is too confusing.

  • For some reason I cant fathom height in anything other than feet. Saying that, I have trouble with km's too.

And no-one really knows what a fathom is.

  • Hands and hectares FTW.

  • It was about 330 furlongs if that's any better.

  • What's that in cubits?

  • Half the length of a bit of string

  • Just got back from a ride to Whitstable via Pilgrims Way - The Whitstable Winder Route.
Posted in the 'Last Minute Rides' forum and enjoyed the company of 'MadeinMelburn' (Ross).
Think I've seen some sun. Averaged 27kph so was fairly quick.
Was defeated by Hollingbourne Hill. Steeper and longer than Toys I reckon.

  • April 300

Another month, another other long ride, this time 300km. Strava is lying when is says 299.9, it was 300.2. Honest.

I think the last bit is my new favourite route home coming from the west.

  • Nice de-stressing ride yesterday (as opposed to the previous day which was distressing). Was supposed to be 2 hours leisurely pace but included a 10km climb @ 6%. I certainly didn't race it but being at altitude means that I was out of puff by the time I got to the top anyway.

7000 calories... WTF? So basically you killed and ate a small pedestrian at some point to keep you going?

  • I must be the only person who can take an 12 hour cycle route, shorten it, and manage to return home 13 hours later. Do you even Garmin?

10:51 moving time, at 17.2mph average? Fucking hell.

I'm not sure I believe that number. I've had a lot of trouble with my garmin HRM reading high in the past (it would randomly jump to 260 when the wind hit me as I crested a hill) which I seem to have mostly got under control now, but I still don't really trust it. Also, nobody told strava how much caffine I'd had.

On the other hand, I consumed 550g of maltodextrin and 28g of BCAAs+glutamine, which is about 2300 calories. Maybe the rest from fat and carb reserves isn't impossible. Dunno.

My g/f remembered Hollingbourne Hill quite vividly.

We had some amazing hog roast in a pub at Boxley, it was so big, that it work out cheaper to order one and share it.

How much do you weigh? How aero is your position?

It sounds feasible for someone of my weight but if you're loads lighter than me than your 'thingie' is likely over-reading a bit (which seems typical).

  • 85kg and not very aero at all, I ride on the hoods all the time and my bike is set up in a pretty conservative position for comfort over speed.

  • Did a 90 mile sportive yesterday - http://www.strava.com/activities/129962340

Was fun, new(ish) saddle was so good I completely forgot about it but my wheels are definitely dying; rear rim is covered in what look like tiny stress-fractures, front rim seems to have developed a sharp edge where the tyre beading hooks into it which led to a few punctures.

Best bit is; the only thing that's sore today is the sunburn.

Then 7000 cal tallies pretty well with a similar ride I did recently.

  • Cycled to football on Saturday and clocked up my fastest time, Looking at the final stats I was only 8 minutes slower than if I drove there, so well chuffed.

Sunday I did as planned, came in to Victoria Park, LMNH and then back. In total just over 19 miles but really annoyed with myself I didn't take a slightly longer route back to clock up 20.

    1. My starting leg is different on my fixie to when I ride my single speed. I'm guessing this is a balance thing because the balance issues I have are worst on one side (my right) than the other.

    2. I almost went through my first red light, because I was concentrating on the next big junction ahead, not the pedestrian crossing just before.

    3. My speed is picking up, I might attempt a forum ride very, very, soon.

    4. I've used my Fuji more in the past few weeks than all my other bikes put together. Next up a bike maintenance class because it needs some tlc.

    5. I just loved this weekend. I am SO pleased, after all the false starts dating back to 2008, that I never gave up.

  • Had an amazing weekend ride way out West on the Yr Elenydd audax. It made all those filthy winter miles worth it.

The scenery in Shropshire is pretty good but is quickly forgotten when you turn into the Irfon valley and the beginning of the 'mountain roads'.

Which after a couple of miles delivers you to the toughest part of the ride and the Devil's staircase (just out of shot above), followed in quick succession by another 3 or 4 steep hills, all separated by twisty descents. It was pretty blowy so I didn't really stop at this point to take snaps; this is the only one I took, somewhere after the staircase and after another steep hill.

After the hills there were obviously some amazing descents. 2 or 3 really long ones. This is the one just before Tregaron where we had lunch in the bowls club served by little old ladies speaking Welsh.

Although my favourite downhill section was after the next epic valley up the Yswyth and down to Rhyader. I think I hit my top speed here, although it was only a modest 46mph.

Might have to make a habit out of weekend Wales trips.

  • Unbelievably nice scenery corlis
