  • Tom, I thought you raced? You'll destroy any speed that was in your legs doing that kind of mileage. If you don't race then fuck it, smash those barriers, you audax bitch haha.

  • Hippy, I do want I want / don't do a fucking thing.

  • You'll destroy any speed that was in your legs doing that kind of mileage.

    this seems true.
train long and slow and you get to ride long and slow. 16.5mph ft(long distance)w!

keep thinking about that with the coming winter in mind - winter rides seem to be slow and kinda grudging things. everyone feeling sluggish and cold and wishing they were in bed. want to race next summer so am hoping that riding with a quick club through the winter will help with both motivation to get the fuck out of bed and resisting the temptation to ride slow between surrey pub lunch destinations and calling that a training ride.

  • train long and slow and you get to ride long and slow. 16.5mph ft(long distance)w!

I've been conscientiously avoiding distance all year just because I don't really feel like it these days (it always takes so long. hour blast round a park much more entertaining for me), so I've been 'training' short and nippy. Despite this, on the occassions I've ridden >60 miles this summer (which, honestly, number about ten) and the occasions I've ridden >130 miles (four) have felt easier and more comfortable than ever. Ho hum.

  • fuck, maybe i'm doing it wrong.
maybe short fast training rides set you up for short fast rides/racing AND long slow endurance rides. live and learn i guess....

  • I think time on the bike = time on the bike. it's all good.

  • Christ I hope the weather's good this weekend. Forecasts suggest good bits/ bad bits, but nobody seems sure of the ratio.

  • Need to eke 120 miles out of the sunshine before 10pm Saturday. Cambridge and back and Brighton and back maybe. Hope it's like it was today (but a little less windy would be nice)

  • Why the recent mileage upswing? Going anywhere spesh?.. Besides Brighton.

  • mao - holy crap! You would win the Paris-Brest event at that pace. Taking weekend (or even day?) rides to new levels there.

    No he wouldn't. It's not a race.

  • I need to do 12 hours this weekend and I will have been out on the sauce four days running. I also have to fit in weekend work. Balls.

  • ^^^Another 500 mile week is within my grasp with minimal effort! Thoughtfully coinciding with a period of unemployment, so there's a degree of time-passing involved. Though I couldn't be bothered with the rain yesterday so I'm a day behind. A bit of Richmond Park today (reasonably quickly, Hippy, but I never felt like I was getting any power out) has bumped me up to 380 so if I just grin and bear it tomorrow I can feel like I have reached some arbitrary achievement.

  • I should do more of that - the goal setting. I find it easier to out-source that kind of thing but it's definitely not as much fun.

  • I only set the goals when I'm half way there. Cheating, really. Not so fussed if I don't get there, it's just a nice round number innit.

  • So's 300 :)

Come meet us at London Bridge at 5.15am tomorrow. We'll find you some miles!

  • "Minimal effort"

    :)

  • Have you gone up to Efyrnwy? Its only about 30 miles from where you are

No, I've never been. Most of my Mum's family live in Cardiganshire - so we've rarely travelled north. Up for trekking up there at some point in the next 12-13 days though if you'd recommend it?

The funny thing is because Wales is so lumpy, you never get into a rhythm climbing, or if you do at any point, there will be a hair raising 17% descent for 300 meters, followed by a nasty steep climb, and so on. Makes long rides pretty tiring - definitely feeling the last couple of days in my legs today.

  • Just noticed this photo - recommend you don't put your waterproof under your saddle bag! No matter how secure you do it, it's still a terrible idea. I have learned this lesson the hard way and very nearly lost a lot of skin as a result.

I hope you are eating more than usual. With so much mileage you will turn into Wiggins in no time. Are you planing to start racing?

    damn!
    that is all.

  • reckon Wiggins looks awesome at mo, hes the exact same weight as me though but several inches taller :$
cant wait to get out and see some country and cover some miles this weekend,,
todays track training was just a teaser.

A little bit more, not very good at eating though. As hippy has pointed out, it's not all useful mileage, and without any training goal I've no idea where it's taking me. Nowhere, really. I'm planning on starting something, I don't know what though. Am very much reaching a point at which competition seems a sensible output.

  • mate, with that bike and those wheels - you need to race

  • Amen to that.
