If you buy the shoes, you're not paying for anything but the shoes
Not really - you are paying a tiny fraction of their opperating costs and a significant chunk of the staff member's wage for that day, in the margin you pay on the trade price. But you know all this.
Do they also do the heat-moulding thing? If so I'd just resign myself to the weirdness and go for it. It's good to know you aren't going to be left to mess it up at home.

There have been so many changes of shops in Hackney, I've forgotten to post here. I maintain the (not so new any more) page at our LCC in Hackney web-site:
With today's launch of the Hackney Peddler 3 (1B Kingsland Road), we're back up to 31 bike shops in Hackney. :) (A few places have closed, sadly, including Look Mum in Mare Street.)
Other recent newcomers are Auguste Handmade in Hoxton Street, HEX Cycles in Drysdale Street (replacing Pretorius in the same premises), and East Side Cycles (featuring Repairs by Stah) in Goldsmith's Row.

More Hackney bike shop news--I just spoke to the people now running a pop-up shop called The Cycling Store (until the end of August) at Fount London, off Westgate Street, E8 (opposite Netil Market). There doesn't seem to be a web-site, only an Instagram account: @thecyclingstore. They're stocking a couple of accessory brands, including Hackney St Cloud, Goodordering bags made by Hackney resident Jacqui Ma, as well as Copenhagen Bicycle Kompany bikes (which seem to be simple Danish sit-up-and-begs).
They're also going to run a weekly Saturday market called the Fount Market, starting this Saturday (18th June) which they very much want to be as cycling-themed as possible. A stall costs only £20, so if you'd like to exhibit your wares there or know someone who does, get in touch with them. There will be twelve market days in total, finishing on the 27th of August. After that, they're hoping to move to a permanent location in Hackney.

Also new in Hackney is a tiny cycling café called Beryl's, after that Beryl, which I think is a great name. Stop by for a coffee the next time you're in the area. It's right on the bend in Dalston Lane (E8) at the junction with Ridley Road, and is attached to About the Bike. It's easy to miss for morning commuters, as it's on your left as you ride past and it's not the easiest corner to stop on when you have someone revving up behind you.

I've been looking at cycle cafes. So good to see places like that thriving and full of non cycling folk too.

Went into BIKE. (bikedot?) today by Stamford Brook to get my hanger fixed and have a look at my rear hub. Really nice little bike shop, and the mechanic/owner Paulo was a lovely guy. Did the job on the spot, and speaking to him afterwards apparently they're going to be starting doing custom frames/frame repairs and respraying which there aren't many people doing in west london atm. Would recommend.

Sad news:
Council chiefs served Cycle Pitstop in Well Street a closure notice last week after receiving 82 complaints in 12 months about anti-social behaviour – such as the “all-night” reggae playback on February 6, and a “green haze” of cannabis outside the shop.

There looks to be a new bike mechanics on Lea Bridge Road - Blackstar bikes, which seems to have taken over an old courier firm's premises: http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/directory/1257/61921.php
I walked past on the other side of the road on Saturday at about 11 o'clock and it was closed, so haven't had a chance to go in and say hello yet.

Whats happened to Mosquito?
-
• #372
It's been sold to Velorution and is expected to re-open at some point under that name.
-
• #373
Thats the worst answer you could have given.
Fuck, Mosquito was a damn good bike shop, the people there knew their shit and velorution is some shite post hipster fluff masquerading as a bike shop.

Popped by seabass to buy a bb remover and 8mm spanner. Helpful chap there informs me he's sorry they sold out but I'm welcome to borrow theirs for a couple of hours.
Good job seabass. I was properly chuffed with this.

Well, it's the truth. :|
Let's wait and see, perhaps some of the old crew will continue working there. I'm certainly keen to find out where Greg moves to, if he moves, or if he's staying.
Heard about this from the Mrs, been away so I missed the hype last week. Looking forward to checking it out.
