The wave of new London bike shops

  • Just taken my bike to the newly opened Clever Mike @ 465 Hornsey Road N19 in an interesting factory space, nice guy with a great selection of vintage frames - www.clevermike.co.uk . Excellent prices quoted for my service - will report back on quality.

1 very well serviced and clean bike for much less than other LBS's - £45 full service as opposed to £120.

  • I went to the Hackney Peddler at Hackney Downs Studios yesterday for the first time. (I couldn't make the launch event.) As they're now basically my local bike shop, I should declare an interest. But they (Dom and Alex) were lovely and they're building up a great shop there. They're aiming to ultimately have an open workshop and are very closely connected to this emerging studio community there. They're currently mainly doing repairs and selling restored older bikes, plus they also have a good relationship with Brother Cycles and are selling Brother frames. Bike obsessives were wandering in and out and great customer service was given to a guy who had a very difficult to untangle problem with his bike. Well worth a visit.

  • Some great shops listed here... but does anyone else have the problem of finding a decent shop in far out east london? Beyond Stratford to Ilford way?

  • +1 for Hackney Peddler. Awesome guys and love what they're doing.

  • Nobody seems to have mentioned Zeevon 'on here'. 143 Lavender Hill, SW11 5QJ yet, but it's open now and their website launches tomorrow.

They have an (early) evening with Nick Craig, the 'nicest man in mountain biking' (apparently, I've never met him) tomorrow 4pm-6pm.

  • Bikeworks have just opened a new one on High rd Leytonstone.

The old guy's hardware shop next door has a great selection sealed bearings, cheap as I found online and he's very helpful.

  • Was in Spitalfields the other day and a new place was just opening up, forgotten its name, but went in for a quick look around and got chatting to the owner / manager.

They're trying to pitch themselves between LMNH and the Rapha shop, i.e., a cafe / bike shop / hangout showing racing and whatnot. I didn't really dig it to be honest, was only selling Boardman bikes and a small handful of clothing (but I think this was due to change), and it felt more like a coffee shop with a few bikes sprinkled around for decoration.

However, it's very early days for them yet and will be interesting to see how it turns out when they're fully operational. They're directly opposite the enormous Evans, which may either prove disastrous or be their saving grace.

  • ^ Peloton & Co

  • Grease, oil, snot = a bike shop

Coffee, clean bikes, poncy clothes = a wank stain.

  • Hmm. To which of the many bike shops in London might you be referring? Hard to imagine...

    Guffaw!!!

  • Just when you thought lots of bike shops had opened, along comes another one:

    Caballo Cycle Café
    32 Chatsworth Road
    E5 0LP
    020-8986 7288

No web-site yet--if you click on this, you can break the Interweb:

    Facebook page:

Looked great when I went in--very busy already, repairs done by a very experienced mechanic who's worked in lots of bike shops, and bikes hanging on the walls. The main guys are Marcos, the owner, and Chris, the mechanic, so drop in and say hello if you're in the area.

  • Not to be outdone, Look Mum No Hands are opening in Hackney, too. Their first branch outside the original one, unless you count the South Bank pop-up, it is at 125-7 Mare Street, at its junction with Westgate Street and King Edward's Road. That takes the number of cycle cafés in Hackney up to three. :) I can't wait to see where the next one will be.

  • A bike shop called There Cycling has just opened on the Goldhawk Road in Shepherds Bush (bordering Chiswick and Hammersmith)

    305A Goldhawk Road, London, W12 8EU

They sell European city bikes, not really my thing, but their workshop did a good job fixing a problem with my bike.

  • It looks like Cloud 9 Cycles are finally back in business on Store Street after having to vacate Camden. I walked past last Wednesday and the shop wasn't yet open, but their website says it now is. Good chaps to talk with if you want to do cycle touring, they can order you a tent which uses your bike as part of the structure, so you know for sure if someone tries to nick it.

  • Brilliant, thanks guys. I bet there are more that we haven't heard about yet. They just keep appearing. :)

Bike Trax in Wanstead, 2 Bike Shacks in Leyton, Bikeworks in Leytonstone

  • Does this have an acronym yet? Like NWOBHM?

WONLBS seems like a solid enough start.

'Cycle PS' on the CS7 - SE11 4RN Newington Butts

  • While on a tour of Hackney with some visitors from Merton Cycling Campaign, we came across yet another new bike shop in Hackney, or specifically Dalston:

    http://mamachari.co.uk/

By our calculation, this takes the number of bike shops in Hackney to 27. That number is probably wrong, as something may have closed without us noticing, and/or something else opened!

The sheer variety is getting overwhelming. We have everything from high-end road bike temples to a BMX shop.

  • Hackney's fourth cycling café:

MATE, STRONG SUSPICION THAT SOME LURK HERE:
    PLACE:http://www.thethingswelove.co.uk/#!ttwl-about/c15bg

Thanks, Kazakh. I haven't been there yet.

  • Have you guys clocked London Bike Kitchen?
    http://lbk.org.uk/

They're v. affable, don't push membership and let you use a card to buy bearings.Very handy workshop. Convenient opening times too.

  • Yes, known about it since before it started. Great place.
