i'm growing seriously scared of someone opening the car's door while i'm passing thru lately. i read on here that it's a criminal offense, but i doubt i'd be able to discuss that if an accident just happened with me.
If you keep your eye on the door/wing mirror area, you can see the movement of an arm before the door opens. Or just give parked cars a 3ft gap and fuck the drivers behind, it's not them who'll get a car door in their face.*
*For posting this advice, Sod's Law will have me smacked in the teeth by a car door within the week.

3ft for a car door is not enough.

The 3ft will give you a greater time to react to an opening car door.

Shaolin monks' guide to riding in London:
1) Watch parked cars for opening doors as per above
2) Watch slow moving traffic for U turns
3) Overtake rather than undertake
4) Never undertake big vehicles at traffic lights
5) Don't let passing traffic force you too close to the pavement
6) When changing direction - aggressively point the finger towards where you're going
7) When you identify drivers to be old and incapable - expect the unexpectable -

Yeah fair point there Skully - I meant a door width. Now I think about it, that's more like 5ft. (From the edge of the handlebars, not the body)

i think it completely depends on the road, how wide each lane is, your speed, the amount of traffic behind you, etc

Take extra care when undertaking/overtaking at junctions?
Don't go faster that the distance you can do an emergency stop in?
