.. I can go back to living a normal life.
No more bikes for you then?

Quite an useful thing to have even if you don't own a car.

Definitely this. After a year of not running anybody over / drunk driving etc you get to use Streetcar / Streetvan vehicles which you can then use to transport your bike to places you may not have bothered with previously. Bit of a win all round.
I'm due to get my test arranged at some point this month - think I've had something ridiculous like 70 hours tuition so far. I feel like a bit of an imbecile, frankly, but that's nothing to how I'll feel if I fail the test on top of that.

i thought you had to drive for two years before you could use streetcar, has that changed?
-
• #35
I thought it was 2 years as well but got a leaflet outside Clapham South station a few weeks ago that said 1 year, so maybe they've reduced it - or maybe I just assumed it was 2 years from the start since that's what most other hire places do.

Now I'm nearly 50, need to do it.
You're as old as Slain?

You can go into pretty much any car/van rental place and hire a veh. so long as you have a full licence and are over 25.

Rather than starting a pointless new thread..
I finally passed my driving test this morning, 4th attempt since November so it was about bloody time!!

Congratulations :) I finally got around to getting a provisional license last month so am trying to crack on with lessons early this year.

Cheers! The AA do some good deals when you block book lessons and the two instructors I had were both really good.

I'm looking for a new driving instructor, does anyone have any recommendations for any near N16?
Preferably not a single lonely mid 40's male who doesn't get out much, or are all driving instructors a bit odd...
-
• #44
It's the guarantee that all their students will be over 16 that attracts them.

Right finally got my licence, 40 hours tuition after never having driven before.
I recommend these guys: http://carcaptain.com/Intensive_driving.html
(Expensive but very professional, take care of all the test booking and other rigmarole)For lessons(not a package as above), these two guys:
Chris: (oh) 79512(nine)0158
Johan: (oh) 79176(oh)8174
(Both really laid back but great teaching styles, not jumping all over the pedals whenever you make a mistake.)Those ^ guys are fucking excellent.

Brian: 07812 766 8four1 (my AA instructor), very calm and is familiar with all the practical test routes around east and north London.

• #49
John, how much all in did it cost for you to get your license?
-
• #50
All up just under £1000 with tests.
Never driven before, didn't have access to a vehicle so I did a full whack of 40 hours with a reputable company. Now I drive like a boss.
I need to do this shit. Sounds a bit odd, but I could never be bothered with driving license.
Now I'm nearly 50, need to do it.
