This article is about a year old now, and many of you have probably already read it, but it's relevant to this discussion and interesting to re-read with all that's happened recently in mind.

And for those who don't know, the rider he's talking about, Xavier Tondo, died in an accident soon after this.
-
• #1004
Agreed - but is is ridiculous to claim the peloton shuns banned riders.
Indeed.
It would be amsuing to see the Peloton pulling back breaks containing dopers in a reverse of Bassons and Simeoni -

Hadn't read that before, very pertinent

Don't forget *Breaking The Chain *by Willy Voet - that's essential reading.
For history, Rouler (either issue two or three) has an excellent article/timeline regarding the comparison between doping and technical advances.
I remember the article above - Xavier Tondo died in bizarre and mysterious circumstances shortly after.....
-
• #1007
Wasn't that mysterious-he got caught between his car and an automatically closing garage door if I remember correctly ;(
Poor guy.
-
• #1009
That's unsurprising coming from Belarus, where old-school doping goes with the old-school Soviet dictatorship.

Pozzato skips a lengthy ban because CONI banned Ferrari from coaching but didn't put his name on their list of banned coaches?

Planning on writing about doping in cycling, history of it, attitude and mainly the Armstrong affair. This is a 5000 word essay, think of it as a mini dissertation? so was wondering if anyone here could recommend any good books or reliable sources on the subject. Tyler Hamilton's book will be out soon so may give that a read. Sorry if I appear lazy not looking for my own resources but felt asking advice of others who probably know more than me was a good place to start
Thankstl;dr= good reading on doping in cycling
To understand why EPO & blood doping is so effective at improving performance in endurance sports, read Science in Sport
website. For an overview of the long struggle to develop effective tests for EPO & blood doping, there's a bunch of interviews with Michael Ashenden around.Watched the 1996 TdF Hautacam stage. Every single rider in the break, bar the big Mig, is a confirmed doper. Depressing.

I guess that Indurain must have been doping, but it's never been confirmed.

just watched that again... Riis. Fucking hell-with the bald head and his popping eyes he looks more like a junkie fleeing an angry dealer on a stolen bike than a pro cyclist!

I guess that Indurain must have been doping, must it's never been confirmed.
During the Festina trial, Thomas Davy was interviewed as a witness and said that there'd been a team wide doping regime at Banesto, similar to the one at Festina.
Indurain was coached by Professor Francesco Conconi, who is widely credited as being one of the exponents, alongside his protege Dr Michele Ferrari, behind the introduction of EPO to cycling.
So I think your guess is correct.

Have another look and see if you can spot a youthful looking chap, still with a full head of hair, at the side of the road, about the 4 or 5 Km mark.
I have a photo from that stage that shows Boardman climbing alongside Chiappucci and Abdoujaparov. It was a peculiar era. -

If I want to buy the secret race on amazon, how do I tell if it's a UK or US edition? Can I assume it's US?
-
• #1017
Different publishers; Bantam in the US.
-
• #1018
Does it matter? What's supposed to be missing from the UK version that makes everyone want the US?
-
• #1019
The versions have different ISBN numbers too, this UK site seems to be stocking the Bantam US version
Amazon UK version is ISBN 9780593071731

More gossip.
I finished it earlier today, it's a well written book but, if you've always believed that doping was widespread across the European peleton for the past 20 years, it doesn't exactly tell you much that's new.

Someone has found "Motoman" (the USPS blood courier in Tyler's book) FB page and is tweeting lots of recent pics of him and friends.

I have the issue but no scanner - it'd be cool to share it.
Got my copy of the Secret Race delivered today, looks like the UK print edition.
