Beginners Polo

  • Paul! I'm sorry to hear that... Get well soon!

I'd be up for Tuesday sessions - at Peckham or Newt if you need people... (maybe Peckham only on rainy occasions? It's also quite far away from where I live...). But somehow Mondays are getting more interesting for me now...

  • Lachieshort, beginners open sessions happen every Wednesday at the Westway Sports Centre, W10.
There are loaner bikes and mallets available to people who dont have their own.

Also there is a beginners / improvers tournament on there on September 15th.

  • Flyers at London Open?
What I was thinking... shall we have beginners flyers ready for the London Open and Hell's Belles for people who are interested? Can anyone photocopy and cut them to size? They would be business card sized. Wording for Westways as well should somehow changed though I guess...

  • That's a great idea Paul, maybe do a design for Westway too which could be the reverse?

I'll happily put some budget your way for 100 (or so) of these to be printed and distributed at the tournaments this week?

They'd need to be sent of to one of the speedy business card people fairly soon though (to be turned around in time).

  • I've got some sorted out.

  • Paul, that's rubbish. What happened?

    Hope you mend quickly.

Wet tram lines at shallow angle, my front wheel slid out instantly and fell straight on the shoulder, same as before. It didn't really stand a chance, it was 3 months since I broke it first so definitely not full strength :/

Bit worried about how long it would take to heal up enough to play polo safely with it, though I've never had any impact in polo that could compare to either crash so I'm hoping it will only be a few months.

  • Aw Paul mate, so sorry, heal up soon.

Re. possible Tuesday - could be up for a sesh if I get my bike fixed.

  • So nothing for Westways, those flyers will be there anyways, Kev?

Jono, Kev, just tell me what to do, the design above is ready to print, amended easily. Just worried about Tue not happening regularly at the moment and the court discussion still ongoing? Could say 'Peckham or Newt'. With 'check lfgss before coming' it should be fine though.

  • I'll have two hundred flyers done up. One side is the beginners tourney, the other side is a general come and play / check the forum blurb.

  • I'll leave it up to Kev, I'm out of the loop.

  • and paul if you are doing your own flyer up, please include westway details please for wednesdays.

  • Lachie, Mondays is 'intermediates' in Borough. Beginners is usually Tuesday night in Peckham (car park off Rye Lane, going on til eleven) or Wednesdays out west. And we're doing very occasional beginners in Hackney.

    Where are you based?

cool ill be down on tuesday, I'm based in islington but am happy to travel far and wide for polo.

  • Lachieshort, you'll need to check this thread before you go. Peckham beginners session hasnt happened for the last two months, so let people know you are interested, and check back online if you can tomorrow afternoon to see if there is anyone else going. Otherwise you'll be there on your own!

  • Ok, flyers with peckham and westways ready to print. I'll find a printer.

  • Thedutch, if you're putting Peckham on the flyers, then are you going to co-ordinate sessions there for the next couple of months while CowHen is still off injured?

Just that I dont see any point in you advertising a night to potential newcomers that doesnt currently exist.

  • I'd agree with Kev here; unless someone is going to take on Peckham on Tuesdays while I'm off the bike, it doesn't make sense to advertise it as a regular session. Make sure people know about this thread as well, seeing as any beginners polo sessions other than Westway are primarily organised here.

  • Yep, could do more harm than good.

Either promote active sessions, or just list this thread.

Would be good to see NE and SE beginners sessions.

  • NE beginners is London Fields on Saturday mornings currently, but it's perhaps a pretty harsh time to expect people to come along (only time the courts free). It could move to Mitch/Downs on night of the week perhaps, it just needs someone to run with it.

  • I think in general that NE, so London Fields or Hackney Downs would be great, eg. Tuesdays besides the Westways sessions on Wednesday. But I don't know all the arguments, and you had this discussion already as I understand. Am I right?
So actually, I was just asking here because I made flyers at some point and thought in case... I agree on your concern that it wouldn't happen if noone runs Peckham.
And for me personally... in spring I went one week to Peckham, the other to Newt on Mondays and I'd rather like to go Mondays since I think I learn more there now. And - I think I'm not advanced enough/often not in town to run a session. Could only imagine to do it together with Rickster, Fiona, Ben, Kit (who's away for the whole summer anyways...) or so...
So - for now I suggest to have Kev's Westway flyers (I want to be in that tourney anyways) and forget the Peckham flyers for now... ??

  • Anyone in Newt tonight? I'll be - can discuss there...

  • Can I propose something radical here? May have been discussed before but I think a Beginners Bike Polo Facebook group would be way more accessible and all the relevant info would be there without having to wade through discussion on here. I know some people don't have fb but the majority do...

As for NE beginners, I'm happy to run with it and Fi might be able to help me too. I went and picked the polo loaner up this morning so it is located on Mare Street now, very close to all NE courts. For purely selfish reasons I don't want to run sessions on a Tuesday/Thursday eve obviously so I'm going to offer to do Saturdays for now starting with the Sat after the LO...then we can figure out what evening works best.

Sorry posting on my phone so might be jumbled...

  • Post the LO, my old polo bike can be used as a loaner again too... it's with Lachie (visiting Aussie) at the moment.

  • Not everyone is on Facebook : (

And shame you're keen on NE beginners Jess just as I'm shipping out SE!

  • Think Jess is right about facebook - a good way to involve people.

Considering Ben, Jess and I are all north it makes sense to try and organise NE beginners at least while Peckham is out of action. Kit'll be back in September and may be happy to run Peckham again.

When is a good time to run beginners sessions for people NE?

And Paul - really sorry that happened. Come down one Monday anyway? You are missed!

  • Lachieshort, you'll need to check this thread before you go. Peckham beginners session hasnt happened for the last two months, so let people know you are interested, and check back online if you can tomorrow afternoon to see if there is anyone else going. Otherwise you'll be there on your own!

    Will do
