+1, we've all done it.
There's even a thread about it.
http://www.lfgss.com/thread60474.htmlAnd clerky screws are really snobbish about their screws but they're also really funny if you chat to them!

This thread is moving too fast for me, this was in reply to ^^^^ and ^^^^^^
When ts walks in they have a "what does this hipster know about tools" look... But he likes being treated like that! :)
Yeah that would be awesome, I assume you got 6m thread? Also quite long bolts, say 100mm? Don't mean to be picky but I've got the bolts... Aready in the mallets, but I've got flat head bolts which have been sanded flat by the scraping on the ground!
Yeah if you are coming on Wednesday that would be awesome.

You need countersunk allen head bolts, Louis... Tsk, tsk, tsk... Depends how far down the pole your nut is, I've got a couple of mallets with 40mm bolts in...
Also... I'll have you know I'm on very good terms with the chaps at Clerkenwell Screws...

Yes Louis, I got the allen head aka socket bolts? in M6, but I only got the 70mm ones. Someone said 100mm isn't necessary. If you are far from them, I don't mind poping down on Monday after work to get exactly what you are after and drop them off Wed or something. I should be at Ladies tonight, if you want the ones I currently have, I can bring them.

What have you done to them to get that treatment? He thrown the receipt at my face instead of given it to me. I might start talking Chinese next time see if it helps.

I'm aware of that but 20 miles is a bit far for me to travel to get bolts! And none of the places near me have Allen key bolts. My choice was a trip to clerks well to pick up a couple of bolts or round the corner and live with having a flat head that I knew would get worn away.
Yeah I am pretty sure that in my current set up 60mm would be long enough... 40 sounds a bit far fetched though! :)

• #3458
So shall I keep a couple 70mm in my bag for you then, sir? I bought an extra few for beginners but they seem to have not wanted to wait and made their mallets already.
-
• #3459
Drop by mine on the way home, Louis... I have a couple of spare 100mm bolts...
-
• #3460
Yeah I only bought 100mm to be sure it would fit.
70mm will be fine, you just need to cut the pole 30mm shorter then.
I'd be a bit nervous about 40mm, it doesn't leave much room for error.

Forgive me if I sound stupid, but how would the length of the bolt have anything to do with the length of the pole? Are you supposed to thread the nut all the way down with a rod and stick the bolt up to tighten it with the nut? Isn't that 1m rod already longer than the pole? Am I missing something obvious here?
-
• #3462
Because it depends how far down the pole your nut has dropped...
So to speak...
-
• #3463
So it would also depend on which end of the pole you cut more then? And the type / size of the nut?

mallet building

Yeah, should really move this discussion to there, why did we start at the first place? :-P

The first thing you need to do is drop the nut down the pole using the threaded rod.
Everything else will depend on that, as you'll need to cut the pole so the distance from the nut to the end is a little bit less than the length of the bolt.

Obviously the corolurary of what John is saying is that if you want a long mallet (and are therefore limited in how much you can cut) you need a bolt of a certain length.
Jo thanks for the offer, I will take you up on it, not sure about tonight, working late then will just want to get home... Hmm I do want the bolts though. Will pm/text
Extra, thanks for the offer, but Jo's kinda on my way home, slightly more than newt... Also save them for beginners, I'm sure someone will need them.

Not really, there is more than enough spare at the top for some pretty long mallets.

You don't actually need a threaded rod, just takes 3x as long without

Actually a second pole and some blue tac would probably work...
