  • We (some novice polo-ists) are going to be mucking about with our new mallets and a polo ball on Tuesday 6th in Bermondsey if any other beginners, or people who want to give us a run around and some tips, wants to join.

We'll be on one of the two spongy green football pitches that are on Drummond Road in SE16- one is near the junction of Tranton road and the other one is a bit further South, behind the City Hope church set back from Drummond Road. Both are a bit sunken/ behind walls so keep looking for them. We'll be there around 6 so come and join if you want to have a go. Bring a mallet if you can.

  • Tuesday 6th in Bermondsey

Yeah, I'm up for that, I'll come down on Tuesday.

  • Well, this is back on in Camberwell again this Tuesday also. Peckham car park is out of action for a few months due to an exhibition.
We'll be at Quorn Road which is an enclosed concrete pitch which looks perfect.
    7.30pm

Seems silly to have two sessions on the same day however, but spongy football pitches doesn't sound ideal, and I already have people coming.
Scratchy feel free to join us any time.

  • Can one of you two move yours, or combine them into one session.

I actually prefer the location and timing of the first one, so I'll probably come to that if it stays as two sessions, but it seems silly to have to beginners sessions on the same day in SE London.

  • Yes i agree but if people want to set up more beginners sessions then that's fine.
I have this arranged with people who probably won't be checking in on the forum, so I don't want to change this.
Also, as I said, spongy green football pitches aren't the best surface and I want to try out this new court in Camberwell which seems perfect.

  • might come by tomorrow
how many people have you got in joni?

  • 5 or 6 at this stage, always subject to change though. I can text you nearer the time to confirm though if you like?

  • Urmm text me if theres a big change. otherwise i'm pretty sure i'll come.

  • Hmm, well if you aren't willing to change yours, I might head down to the 6pm one in Bermondsey, and then head down to yours afterwards, maybe I can drag the others there along for one big session, especially if the surface is a bit shit.

  • Hiya, we are a bunch of people who work together and want to have a practise of polo at one of the two pitches that are right outside our work. We are actually going to be there form 5/5.30 so come earlier if you can/want to.
The pitches are fine- its not that spongy! Its a football pitch and we played there already. See you there if anyone ants to join.

  • I can't make this now, something's come up with work which I can't get out of.

    Sorry guys.
Might do a Thursday session if there's interest?

  • I am interested, Joni.

If you have different needs, you guys might feel free to start your own thread. Wicksie is running this so far so good

It seems this debate lacks of a point.

  • I'm sure everyone can share a beginners thread!

  • True, but the whole thing is to get them in the same picth so we can play games, not to spread the few who turn up in differents courts. Plus, if I got it right Joni has already some experience within Polo, tips&advices, which it might come handy/helpful if we are beginners.

    However... whatever.

  • Thanks both.
Obviously more people playing polo is a very good thing and is to be encouraged.
Scratchy's group seems to be a work venture and so it's kind of him / her to invite others.
My only concern is that I have to try hard each week to get numbers to make it worth while, even though there are lots of people 'on the book'. Obviously people are free to go where ever, but if the beginners polo becomes fragmented, I don't think there's enough of us to go around at the moment.

  • If there was a didicated day then people might know when it is each week. Would be better if u could get good numbers you'd all learn togeather fast. Just my 2pence just seems lack of new players at polo but seems to be people saying they want to play but joni canny get them at the beginners sessions?

Which was entirely my point, about two sessions on the same time, in the same area, at the same time.

Now I realise in this case both events had been arranged off forum, so it's understandable, but it would be good to avoid it in future, as personally I would have liked to have turned up to both sessions.

As Wicksie can't do hers tonight, why doesn't everyone who was going to go to Wicksie's come to the Bermondsey one. That's what I'm going to do anyway. Wicksie, would you mind letting your people know?

  • Yep good point Gormley. There wasn't a dedicated day because of low numbers, so I was doing it when I could muster enough people. I wanted to be flexible to get people involved.
I'll say it's Tuesdays, 7.30 pm at Quorn road from now, until Peckham's available again.

John mine isn't entirely off forum and I don't really want to start changing this around because some other people are having a tap around, sorry.

As I said I think it's great people are doing this, but I want to have a dedicated session for beginners which is now at a fixed time, and as these sessions are quite established (long before this thread started) I don't think it's fair to change them.

The other people are my other half, housemate and the people who used to do the Peckham sessions, and I feel confident in saying that that they won't be going to Bermondsey, not for any arsey reasons, it's just hard enough to get them out to the court round the corner!

Scratchy, good luck with your tap around, if you want mixed games, or play with some people who've played a bit before, do come along to beginners or obviously any of the regular throw-in sessions around as they're also very accommodating.

  • +1

...we could keep Thrusday as randomly extra' session too, though being Tuesday the fixed one.

I'll say it's Tuesdays, 7pm at Quorn road from now, until Peckham's available again.

Ok fine, so now we know that's a fixed date and time now, that's much easier to work with. I'll talk to scratchy later, and if they plan on doing a regular thing I'll try and get them to do it another day, so that everyone who wants to can go for both. Again having both on the same day on a regular basis just goes against what we are trying to achieve (playing more polo).

Fair enough. From the thread it sounded like the beginners wasn't regular so far, you had said it wasn't happening for two weeks, and you had just decided to do it then after scratchy had already annouced his. Apologies if I got this wrong then.

The other people are my other half, housemate and the people who used to do the Peckham sessions, and I feel confident in saying that that they won't be going to Bermondsey, not for any arsey reasons, it's just hard enough to get them out to the court round the corner!

That's understandable, you know them well, just wanted to make sure they knew about it. I've PM'd crumb about tonight, as he mentioned he wanted to turn up at yours.

Also if there is any demand, I'm happy to host a session in NE, such as at Brick Lane. On a different day obviously ;)

  • Yep, Tues as regular but reserve the right to amend / add to this.

John, it's happened most weeks we had enough people, it didn't happen last week as I was on holiday, and this week it's happening Thursday.
I have been texting people 'on the book' as I've said I like to communicate directly with people whilst we don't have regular numbers turning up, as I don't want people turning up when it's not happening.
These sessions have been running for about a year but I'm trying to get more beginners involved. I'm happy to review the location if we get enough permanent interest and can find a decent court.

  • Cool. I'm probably down for Thursday, if you think there will be enough people, i'll confirm on the day.

  • Good times, John, PM me your number for quick confirmation nearer the time, but I'll keep this thread updated.
    Cheers y'all.

  • Joni rocks!

  • Trouble with Thursday is it's the same as wests (which is basically also a beginners session too!)... I'll be out west on Thursday and I hope crumb will be too...

Wicksie, you should bring everyone out west as that way you also get to go to west drinks after! :)
