  • just want to remind you that motor transport kills a lot more people than cycling. Obviously, there are more journies made ... but still. More people die driving than cycling.

True, but not enough is made of the awareness of the dangers of cycling - both to motorists and to cyclists.

With motoring the dangers are inherent in its very form, in that you're piloting a huge hunk of metal effortlessly capable of high speeds, at which the slightest deviation from total concentration could easily result in catstrophic injury or even fatality. The potential of this occuring when cycling is minimal and therefore more needs to be done to ensure that cycling is a lot less risky than it currently is.

I think this ride is all about raising awareness, as well as a fitting memorial.

  • just to let you guys know that i work with Meryem Ozekman's brother, i did speak to him some time ago about ghostbikes etc and he was very keen, if you would like me to speak to him about the plans let me know.

  • cheers RS- that would be great if you could.

    meeting at 7:30pm Souths Beers.

  • can't make it souths tonight, so post the details and i'll have a chat with him then

    Henry

  • If we are highlighting collisions with motor vehicles then the organisers should be aware that Martyn Dobson - the rider who died in Richmond Park - is a bit of a mystery. No cause of death was established by his post-mortem. He apparently came off his bike with no other vehicles involved, and I don't believe to this day anyone knows if the fall caused his death or whether he just died in the saddle.

  • thanks BQ.
this is a bump to let people know that i've been a bit side tracked the last few days, but should be back on this after the weekend.
    Henry

  • Henry,
I spoke to Meryem's brother and he supports the idea, he is not sure how he can help but i will keep him updated as this thread develops.

  • excellent.
    things are progressing slowly.....
    but not being forgotten.
    I promise.

  • Well done Henry, still on for another meeting next Monday?

  • a bit of a bump, but also to let you know i have a full bike ready for paint and ghosting if it is required.

  • thanks socksam!
i need someone to take over the running of all things for the next 3 weeks as i'll be out of the country with no internets.
they'll need to take over the searching for ghost bike-involved people, as no one has even bothered to reply to me.

and the running of the Next steps, IMO:
Leaflet Critical Mass with info + ride date.
    Draft Email
    PR work- Paper lead article
    Draft Plaques.
    Any takers?

  • So, I'm pretty close to just stepping away here.

I've sent Pm's to people involved with the previous rides, i've sent emails to people involved with the ghost bike campaign, and various other emails.

With a few notable exceptions, the response has been shit.

I posted up that I needed help a week ago, and received 0 responses.

I've been away, and busy sorting out visas for my work in Jordan, where I am now, my time in Beirut, and my time in, inshallah, the West Bank with MAP (http://www.map-uk.org/), which has been very difficult, and so just needed someone to step in for 3 weeks, to keep the ball rolling.

Or at least not let this thread die the death it has.

    Sorry all,
    Henry

  • I should point out that:

    1. I am VERY fucking tired right now, so in a generally moany mood- 4hrs or less sleep a night is killing me, and 30+ degree weather, and full day shifts.
    2. I want this ride to work, so will keep trying after 3 weeks, but I'm just going to get busier and busier, and I need help.
    3. This ride is important to me, but I can see the arguments against it.
  • Hi Henry, great to hear from you, just back from Italy so don't know which way is up, I think we have loads of time but I could be confused, I'll speak to some people...
Look forward to seeing you, have an amazing time!

Let us know when you return.

    1. august or september
