Easyjet broke my bike!

  • Si,
I never ride plastic bike before- this one is called Giant TCR C2. Haven't broken anything on it yet.... Bars are kinda wide, cranks are kinda long, seat angle is kinda slack and the indexing needs a little, ahem, attention. Apart from that it's fine. Oh yeah, the saddle is horrible- it says Massi on it-anyone heard of them?

We did seated starts today so less opportunity for really kicking it!

Have you whispered to it yet?

  • Not everyone can afford to ignore budget airlines unfortunately.

It costs nothing to ignore budget airlines. It costs the same it ignore the premium (?) ones too.

  • Kumquat.

  • Seriously I can see why people are tempted by the price, but I am not prepared to be treated like a complete cunt from start to finish, and especially if I have cause to complain. Life is too short.

Sorry, but I can't agree at all.

I fly Ryanair and Easyjet wherever possible, I've flown well over 100 times with them over the last few years, and would always choose them above the traditional airlines, even when work pays.

Sure they aren't as polite and nice to you, and you have to wait in lines, but who gives a fuck, I don't fly for the service, I fly to get somewhere, and they do that as well as anyone else, and in my experience often better. Sure I've had the odd delayed flight, and once had to wait overnight (due to weather), and once lost a bag for 3 days, but I've had far worse from the likes of BA and Lufthansa.

  • you can get really good bike boxes for transporting bikes on planes, like a large suitcase. My dad uses one for when he goes back to the states. Also another way you could avoid getting your bike fucked is by not using easy jet. There fucking shit

  • This is what happened when I was moving back from france and took my '84 Colnago Master through Charles de Gaulle. Soft bag but with drop out braces and ridiculous packing/padding. I think they literally dropped it from the plane to ground level. Absolutely no come back with the airline either. So between this and my experiences of the French postal service, I now had a deep seated, if illogical, hatred of france. Well, not really, but I still get a surge of adrenaline thinking about it. I took the bike to my local builder and he straightened it back out really well but the seat stays are slightly kinked and I have no confidence riding it at speed any more, but don't have the cash to get them replaced then a re-spray done. Boo hoo.

Enjoy your riding anyway-glad to hear you got it fixed and hope you get it home in one piece.... !

  • Have you ever had cause to make a complaint that - for whatever reason - you have had to deal with from start to finish yourself personally (ie you can't get someone in admin at work to do it)?

I have not but I have read enough consumer advice to have made a very simple decision - I am not prepared to fly budget unless I am absolutely 100% happy that whatever goes wrong I will walk away and make no attempt to get redress. In practice this means that I am not prepared to fly budget. As consumers our choices have outcomes and I am not prepared to support a business model based on encouraging environmental destruction and appalling customer service. (By making flights very cheap they are clearly encouraging flying more than normal airlines do).

I probably shouldn't have mentioned the work bit, as that implied I mainly fly for work reasons, that's not true, the vast majority of those flights have been personal, and the few problems I've had, have been on personal flights. I simply mentioned that to show imoney isn't the reason I fly with them.

I have had to deal with two issues, the lost bag and the overnight stay due to the weather. Both times I got the result I wanted, which was the bag returned, and my overnight costs covered, and both without much effort. Sure I had to chase them in both cases, in the case of the bag I had to ring them to see where it was, and with the money I had to actively ask for a voucher (many people on the same flight just went home and didn't ask), but I don't see that as a problem, that's just being proactive.

The difference is the budget airlines won't tell you about your rights unless they have to, and if you see that as bad customer service, then fine, but I have got everything I have asked for, and am perfectly happy with their service.

The environmental issue is another issue, but suffice to say I'm not going to fly any less because of it, because I don't just fly for the fun of it, so I appreciate an organisation which is going to give me what I want as efficiently as possible.

  • You shouldn't have to be the proactive party when a company fucks you.
Easyjet have been fine for me. Ryanair do not exist.

They haven't fucked me, they lost a bag and had bad weather. It happens. Both situations were sorted.

And while in some sort of ideal world they would constantly update me on the status of my bag, and run after me to give me my hotel voucher, I don't expect any company to do anything for me I haven't asked for.

  • I'm not talking about delays due to weather and lost bags. Unless of course it was the airlines that lost the bag.

If your time isn't that important to you that's great. Mine is. So is my money. This is why Ryanair get none of it.

I didn't say my time wasn't important to me, but I don't think making one phonecall to ask where a bag is, is too much to ask (or what were you implying).

Anyway, that's fine if you don't want to fly with them, that's your choice. Personally I wouldn't want to have my choice of destinations reduced, and I haven't got any reason not to fly with them, though it sounds like you have.

  • Bingo.

  • Bingo.

    That being?

  • It's this great game where numbers are called out and..

  • The mech hanger got bent on my old road bike while travelling with easyjet, not badly, I managed to bend it back but it hasn't been used a great deal since as I got a new bike, don't think it would last long.

I've travelled loads with bikes and that is the only problem I've had, I used to get away with cycling my bike there and turning the bars round and it always came back perfect. I definately have got less confidence taking my bike now and try to avoid it at all costs. Would only use a soft case for MTB's and if I have to take my carbon road bike I'll be getting a hard case or the dakine one. Hopefully that should be a thing of the past though as my new frame with S&S couplings arrives tommorow!

No, I meant what is the reason you don't fly Ryanair? If you don't mind saying?

  • It's too soon to talk...

  • No, I meant what is the reason you don't fly Ryanair? If you don't mind saying?

  • I don't feel you are taking this very seriously ;)

I'm just curious, as all I ever hear is people complaining about them, but I've never had any issues.

  • Are you British?

  • Are you British?

    Yes I am.

  • Well, you wouldn't have any issues with their online-only checkin system then.

  • Well, you wouldn't have any issues with their online-only checkin system then.

No not in the slightest, I hate offline check in, I've been using it ever since they've had it, even when you had to pay for it.

  • Ryanair's online check-in isn't available to non-UK citizens.

  • Ryanair's online check-in isn't available to non-UK citizens.

    Well that's simply not true.

It used to be the case that only EU citizens could check in online, but to be fair that's most of their market.

But now anyone can, as long as they have their documents stamped.
