That's shit dude....hope he's fully recovered and none the worse for it.
I completely agree with you about dogs off the lead and not under control. Slight diversion but I reckon all dog owners should spend time learning about dog body language before doing any socialisation. The number of times I hear 'he's friendly' when the dog is obviously stressed or defensive is maddening!

• #353
Yeah, he's good thanks, fortunately. I'm sure it will happen again and, unfortunately, there's not much you can do about it. I already avoid certain parks at certain times.
"He's just playing", "he's never done that before", "your dog's in tact, that must have set him off", "he's normally OK, it must be your dog"... the usual...

Spent months of trying different foods from junk right up to crazy exotic freezer stuff until we found something ours would reliably eat and seem to benefit from. Ended up that the grain free dried foods work best for ours, can't remember the brand but around £30/35 a bag which lasts her about 5 weeks. Poops are consistent and don't really smell, fur and general health is very good, especially for her age, few people believe she is as old as she is.

mawwwww. Are you in love already?

I have to admit that I'm still feeling a little anxious about the whole thing but I'm also really excited about it. We love dogs and know we are well set to provide a fantastic environment for this little guy but it is still a big deal that shouldn't be underestimated.
Actually choosing a dog yesterday made me realise how much fun this is going to be. Even if this is timed so i'll be doing middle of the night toilet visits in November :P

Good luck!
I've had hazel a yr now and so know what you mean about Nov!
I didn't want to have to get up at night (shit parent) so padded the house front door area. She instinctively went on the pads I put near the front door on day 1. Lucky! She had her crate but door open. I read about crate training to teach them to hold, but I just think when their tiny bladders are full it's gonna come out and I'm gonna have to clean the crate and sleeping stuff! Lazy parent.
In retrospect, I would have done differently:
Got a dog wee tray thingy for inside and out instead of just padding the doorway but I think having the tray delineation would have helped.
Also in the backyard, contain it to one area. Lovely brown patches everywhere on lawn now.Nappies - I used some for her first season and was like, why didn't I put them on her for nights?!
Lazy lazy parent! There was one day which was basically me on the floor mopping, spraying, mopping....little bastard didn't like using the same pad twice. Shat on the wall once... wouldn't use a pad we had walked over...grrr -

Got this little girl fosetring with us at the moment
The assessment there is warts and all but she is calming down and getting much better. She's an absolute cuddle monster too.
A word on having dogs off the lead, my lurcher got slammed into by a black lab and ended up with an abcess and in the vets for a few days (which he hates) and I do agree that that if you let them off the lead you need good levels of control, but also trying to keep your dog from meeting other dogs is bad for it. Also dogs feed off your energy, so if you are tense and stressed and shouting when others dogs come up, your dog will feel that way too, and then there is much greater chance of a flash point and a fight. Also dogs meeting off the lead are less likely to kick off then some dogs off the lead and some dogs on.

Bit technical on the mountainbike but ideal for the dog.

Fuck fireworks night, our bitch is terrified and has spent most of the evening quivering with fear as she hates loud bangs and flashes. Just to compound matters the school next door to our house have delayed their firework display until next weekend so we have the same shit next week.

Aren't fireworks fucking great? My big dog loves them more each year. Little dog is not that fussed.

In my quest to learn what the fuck I need to k ow to own a dog I stumbled across a product called a thundershirt for dogs. Apparently excellent for calming dogs during storms or fireworks.
You don't need to buy the product, snug bandaging around the body has the same effect from what I have read.

Thundershirts come from Tellington T Touch therapy, which I have been studying. I have another lesson this Monday. Both of our dogs have been in their Thundershirts this evening. One of the ideas is that by adding a gentle physical stimulus it helps a dog find new ways to react to situations and other stimuli. It has been really effective with our two hounds, our bitch has been much better this year with the whizz bangs, but this evening has overwhelmed her. Last year she spent most of the evenings coming up to Guy Fawkes night hiding under our bed, this year today has been the only time she has completely cowered away and hidden herself in the bedroom.

Very, very cute.

Just what is it with fireworks? My lab is a gundog - shoot hundreds of shots near her - nothing.
One firework - trembling wreck. Same with previous labs.
-

our dog has problems with flashing lights, and she can get obsessed about following reflections
we have done some gundog stuff retrieval work with her and that was fine, so i assume its illumination from the fireworks
lightning also freaks her out

All of my 4 are working gundogs, I appear to have the only dogs which run TOWARDS firework displays.
Incidentally, they are fit, glossy and healthy on working dog specific dry food.

oh looks, there's a dog thread. I have a dog.
One on the neck, the other on the back leg. Both done by dogs off the lead with clueless owners who had no control.
