• That's the reason I'm insisting we get a non moulting breed, my in-laws' place is crazy, their shepherd seems to shed all year round...

Basenji mum is due to give birth today, OH is now coming around to my original idea of getting a cavoodle/Labradoodle as she's worried a Basenji might be too much of a handful for her when I'm out at work during the day... We shall see, breeder is coming to visit in a couple of weeks so we can all have a proper chat and see if we'll be a good fit for each other...

  • You're getting a dog, it will be a piss-taking cunt. All dogs are cunts regardless of breed, only the degree of cuntishness varies. The nastiest dog I ever met was Yorkie called Cleo which would have killed thousands if it had bigger jaws. Best of luck, you will also have fun times.

  • cavoodle/Labradoodle or Basenji

I had to google it because just the name didn't say much to me, regardless of the personality I think the Basenji is cooler.

  • It's not about cool tho', is it? It's about getting a dog that's gonna fit in with our lives...

I'd much rather have a Shiba Inu or an English Bull Terrier but that's isn't gonna work... Once a designer, always a designer...

  • Why not the Bull Terrier? All the ones I have met have been cheerful and daft as a brush.

  • We love them (a mate has a white one and a client has a black/white one) but they don't fit the brief of low/non shedding and medium sized... I know they're not huge, etc, they're pretty naughty and need a lot of socialising and training which I'm not convinced my OH would have the energy to manage... We need a mild mannered, easygoing, cuddly dog that doesn't shed a lot and is easy to train...

    Pic is Christmas Day, 2018...

  • What about Cockapoo/ spoodle? We had a loan cockapoo and he was great, smart and non shedding

  • Yeah, any of those poodle crosses would be great TBH... Only problem is they're all so fucking expensive now!! I started looking at XXX-oodle breeders before covid when they were much cheaper, OH and I procrastinate a lot... 🤑😂

  • The price of dogs has gone though the roof (in NZ anyway) although having said that if you go direct to a reputable breeder and not to a random listing on trademe the prices seem normal

  • Even the decent breeders seem to be getting in on the act, so many scammers out there as well... OH's old man was looking at getting her one and flicked me over a few websites to check out, all fake!! Weird times...

  • Picked up our Calvin from the breeder yesterday. Good breeder experience- highly recommended etc.

Here’s the little bundle of terror.
Clean first night which was a shock.
Immediately made up for it of course.

  • Mega cute

Fuck me, just googled to see how expensive they are - between £2k-£3.5k! I've got a schnoodle and cavapoo (and a rescue mutt) that were £450 each 6 and 7 years ago (mutt was free in Hong Kong). They are all lovely, amazing dogs.

  • a dog with all the papers and the fancy shmancy cruftsy name - yup, 2K easy.

  • We are getting a KC registered Border Terrier, cost is less than the mongrel we had previously.
And the breeder was haggling herself down because she just wants him to go to a good home (us)

But yes, prices are teddy bonkers.

  • We need to get busy with acclimating this little horror to being ok with being alone. We're trying a "giver her a treat and then leave the room for 20 mins at a time and then not making a huge fuss when we reappear - method" so far results have been... mixed.

  • EDIT: completely misread your post.
    As you were.

    Edit2: cute furball

  • you were probably right in what ever you said.

she's not really been outdoors yet either - she had vax #2 last week tuesday and the received wisdom seems to suggest at least a week before you take 'em out into the world. Tomorrow... maybe.

  • A rescue dog?

  • I wondered why I always see this kind of dog with owners of similar IQ, often kinda macho right-wing shite, I mean no blame to the dog.

  • Am not a dog owner, but have looked after a cockapoo quite a bit, and my mate has a cavapoo, former colleague a shih-poo and the prevailing vibe seems to be that poodle crosses, and poodles, due to their inherent intelligence, need loads of stimulation or they become absolute nightmares. Obviously behavioural issues can crop up regardless of breed and are probably a result of nurture more than nature. Perhaps theres some correlation between people who want a non-shedding dog and those who want a dog without any of the associated inconvenience, picking up hair, socialising it, paying it the slightest bit of attention... There was a whole thing with the person who came up with the labradoodle breed massively regretting it or something.

  • They're great dogs, we used to look after one all the time and we became very fond of him... Teddy loved being cuddled, was a massive attention seeker, loved barking from our stoop at kids and other dogs walking down our street, was pretty good with other dogs and obviously loved his walks, I'd walk him to the beach and he'd go wild in the water... Wouldn't say no to one but don't wanna have to find AU$7k for the privilege... I miss Teddy!

  • Oh for sure, all of those examples that I've spent time with have been lovely dogs. I just wouldn't describe any of them as easy-going, and it seems like people want to go for the poodle crosses as an easy-going option a lot of the time

  • I'm a living breathing example of breed prejudice. Two people I know have cockerpoos and they are seriously out of control dogs. Aggressive (will bite defending food, toys, the owner...will even bite a person out of jealousy if they stop paying attention to the dogs etc), poor recall, excessive barking causing complaints from neighbours. Even though I know 100% that these two owners have really fucked up with their basic training and are totally flaking out on solving this behaviour, it still makes me feel hugely cautious of cockerpoos. Unfair I know. I appreciate that this is irrational.

  • That said, are Cockerpoos regarded as "beginner friendly" dogs?
