• Looks like a proper little character.

  • Dalmatians are prone to deafness and blindness just like white Boxer Dogs suffer deafness. Inter breeding to obtain desirable traits concentrated certain other unwanted traits. See also Rhodesian Ridgebacks which have a form of spina bifida causing the ridge.
Odd coloured eyes are quite common in all dogs but Sheepdogs and crosses with them seem more prone to it. They are no more likely to be deaf than a dog with "normal" eyes.

  • Australian sheepdogs seem to be particularly likely to have unmatching eyes - with their unusual colouring, they look so cool - there's one near us and it's the most beautiful dog in the area:

  • £890 lighter today.

A grass seed entered between the toes and worked its way up into his ankle, causing an abscess. And a castration involving one undescended testicle.

I know it hurts, but I should be the one whining given the damage to my credit card...

  • Those grass seeds are a bugger - my boy needed two operations just to get rid of one. The other horrifying aspect is that if you don't find them, they can get into the bloodstream and cause heartattacks. Hope he's enjoying the drugs.

  • Sod him, it’s me who’s going to need the drugs.

Seriously though, grass seeds are a nightmare. Lambeth left the grass in all the parks around Brixton to grow longer this year, and we’d come home from our walks covered in them.

  • In Blackheath and Greenwich they leave acres of the parkland to grow into meadows so similar story here.

I must admit, as a new dog owner, i thought that local dog owners are disproportionately freaked out about grass seeds than they need to be. A few people I have met won't even let their dogs run in the grass.

Turns out that I'm wrong. Poor chap. Hope he heals up fast.

  • Thanks. He’s not too chuffed right now...

  • Errol fits perfectly in a Brompton C bag. We've done a few 30 minute rides and he seems fine.

  • A few people I have met won't even let their dogs run in the grass.

That does seem a little extreme, but you do need to check their paws when they get home.

  • The problem is that, even if you find a seed in the paw, it can be difficult to get it all out because of the “barbs”.

  • A few people I have met won't even let their dogs run in the grass.

That could also be to avoid ticks.

  • Sigh.

If it wasn't bad enough already with spine and hip problems, and respiratory distress as soon as the temperature goes above 15 degrees, our neighbours five year old Frenchie has just lost an eye. No traumatic accident, just sort of flopped out, got infected and couldn't be saved.

The running vet bill total is now over £15,000. Not easy on a teacher's salary.

  • We had a grass seed hiding in our terriers eye last month, one of our cheaper vet bills.
Also recently spent a long day on a beach chucking a ball without really contemplating the potential danger of ingesting sand. He did some seriously heavy, mixed poops for a couple of days after, luckily didn’t show any signs of stomach cramps or discomfort but next time I’ll be a lot more careful.

  • Having been fine all week, Reggie managed to get his cone off when I went to the shops on Saturday, got the bandages off his leg and chewed out the stitches. There wasn’t enough skin to sew it back up, so we’re into weeks of gradual healing and 24 hour supervision. And big bucks, which is why I’m glad he’s insured. Putting money aside instead each month is fine, but not much use if you have a big bill in the first couple of years.

  • Here’s the self-inflicted damage (happy to take it down if deemed too graphic). Staffies’ pain threshold is ridiculous, he was walking and jumping around like nothing had happened.

  • Fuck dogs are stupid! Ours do similar moronic things. Hurt themselves and then injure the injury.

  • My stupid dag was at full stretch on his zippy lead, hoovering up the black "cherries" that had fallen off the Laurel bushes lining our route. He's eaten them before but I've never been inclined to google them.
Until now - Laurel berries are poisonous to dogs if eaten in large quantities and can give the dog stomach upsets. The pits of these berries produce cyanide which can cause health problems related to food poisoning.
So better not go that way again for a while.

  • Ouch. Poor lad. Hope he and your wallet heal up quickly.

  • Thanks, waiting at the vet right now while they change the dressing. Apparently it’s already looking much better

  • @Markyboy oooof. Hope he heals up okay !

Getting Buzz was the best thing I think I've ever done. He makes us both so happy and it feels good to know we gave him a home after he was given back to the shelter by his previous owner. How they could give him up I will never know.

We were incredibly curious about his lineage so we did a DNA Test (his mother forced me!) And it turns out he's 50% Chihuahua 50% Beagle. Apparently some people call them cheagles... Here's a photo of him being very unimpressed with New York's rain this weekend. He likes the jacket though. Won't go out in the rain unless he's wearing it 😂

  • There are a few sighthound owners on here right?

I can highly recommend the dog clothing that this lady makes. Particularly the raincoats.

    https://www.redhoundfordogs.com/

The fit, quality and attention to detail is top level. Honestly some of the best hand made objects of any kind I have purchased!

  • Yeah, I'll be keeping my wife away from that website...

We've had a lot of success with Equafleeces and these (though I think ours is branded differently)

  • I'm not sure we'd be able to get our whippet out of the front door in winter without Equafleece's help.

The best bit about the redhound raincoats is that they have snoods that come up to the ears. Snug as fuck.

  • Another vote, or two if you count both cockers, for Equafleece. The labradors don't give a shit, unless it is somewhere embarrassing.
