  • True, but i suppose (e.g.), a lugged track frame, which is already used on the road, not track, etc, etc, plus the fatigue of constant clamping-unclamping, will all in the end shorten the frames life, no?

    Depends on the frame material.

This is entirely true for alu frames, but much less so for steel frames.

This is because steel (given a certain load cycle/stress) will deal with the stress cycling forever (literally), whereas alu will fail after a certain number of cycles..

Obviously, points already made in the thread about over tightening notwithstanding..

  • Cool beanus, thanks :)

  • cant you just magnatise some at home for free?

  • my experience with those neocube magnets. they fit snug in the 5mm seatpost clamp. They are a bit too small for the 6mm stem bolts and the seat bolts. you can pick them out with something small.
In my 5mm seatpost bolt you can push the ball bearing all the way in and this gives the allen key enough room to still fit in and turn the screw. so if the thief has the allen key to undo the seat post bolt then they don't work. Also I got mine pushed in all the way and now I can't get it out. I'm gonna get a big ass rare earth magnet and see if that can pull it out.

the superglue is a way better way prevent theft.

    apologies

  • I have a hot air rework station for EE soldering, allows you to properly heat up the bolts and melt in a high temp silver based solder. You can turn up the air pressure to blast it out when you need to adjust things. Don't know how safe it would be from a proper attack, but you can't mechanically lever it out (afaik).

  • I would cry if my B17 got nicked - but who would want a saddle that's shaped to my BS?

  • True, but i suppose (e.g.), a lugged track frame, which is already used on the road, not track, etc, etc, plus the fatigue of constant clamping-unclamping, will all in the end shorten the frames life, no? One of those frames seen at BLB was ....mine, bought used from the shop with a QR seatpost clamp, I was told all this at Roberts in Croydon, when I took the frame to be repaired. Mr. Roberts was actually the one telling me QR seatpost on a track bike was a bit silly and inadequate.

While I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments regarding BLB, I am afraid you're mistaken in this instance. Steel isn't a material that develops stress fractures - it has no 'stress memory'.

Unlike aluminium, which can only endure a finite amount of abuse before it begins to develop faults, you can subject steel to the same force infinitely without compromising the structure of the material.

Basically, if a force doesn't break steel the first time, it will never break it. That being said, if you have the thumbs of Hercules, you might be able to crack a frame just by tightening a QR too much.

Mr. Roberts probably said they were inadequate because it's not often that you need to adjust the height of a saddle on a track bike.

  • Or get me to stamp 'I'm a cunt' on your saddle. Who would buy that off a crackhead?

  • If one is to superglue a ball bearing in a bolt how do you go about taking it out again?

  • If one is to superglue a ball bearing in a bolt how do you go about taking it out again?

Nail varnish remover makes it go gloopy after about 15mins therefore allowing you to pick out the bb and carry on with removal of said item.

    I thank you!
