  • Bill, tell me if it's none of my business, i'm just curious, do your riders have to have a brake?

Yes, we insist that they do. Despite the fact that it was very unpopular, and caused numerous arguments.

  • But, if they are using a braking system that is less effective (FGNB or freewheel rear/front only), then they could be dangerous in comparison to double brake.

But as you have already pointed out, expecting everyone to have both is unrealistic.

  • Whatever Bill, the question here is whether it's something that should be legislated against by a ruling body, not about the effectiveness of the braking system.

Surely if people want to use a less effective braking system, its up to them.

But, if they are using a braking system that is less effective (FGNB or freewheel rear/front only), then they could be dangerous in comparison to double brake.

Exactly the point. I think if you are going to compel fixed riders to have a hand-brake, then there is no sound argument for not also insisting that free-wheel riders should have 2 brakes.

  • pique should have 2 brakes, he's dangerous.

  • next step: standard bikes

  • standard sized people, who all look the same.

  • Fixed :)

    next step: standard Boris bikes

  • next step: standard bikes

  • "in regards to the fixie brake issue, the rule has been amended. We don't care how you stop your bike, only that you can stop your bike, so the handbrake rule has been eliminated, but you will be penalized for crashing into people if you can't control your bike. (brakes or not). We felt it wasn't fair to introduce this after the season has started. We trying to stick to simply clarifying existing rules during the season, and only adding new rules once a , before a new season starts."

  • so hopefully the rule will be added at the end of this season.

  • haha

I had a long talk with Ben right after this rule was added. He contacted me a few days ago to say that have rescinded the rule. He said he agreed with my points. So it sounded, from that talk I had with him, like they will not add this rule after this season. Although the posting above does make it sound like they will reconsider it.

In any case, good to know that they were responsive to the community. Very professional of Ben.
