  • I think Meyer vs Clancy would be a great contest. Meyer's proved his recovery within individual events, and stayed strong over a few days, but hasn't proven his ability to knock out a number of different disciplines on the same day. That's probably the kind of endurance that develops with age (up to a point), so they'd both be stronger in a couple of years. On the one hand, Meyer looks like a machine (with a bad haircut), but if the GB management would actually get behind Clancy 100% for the omnium (and stop wasting time on pathetic deification of someone who's past their peak and a member of a defunct and embarrassing historical phenomenon (who gives a fuck about 'The Empire'?)), I think we'd see huge leaps in performance.

Personally, I'm really excited about the 'resurgence' of Aussie track cycling, and the fact Bauge has reached maturity, and Sireau has 10 years left in which hone his skills to back up his amazing (world-record-breaking) speed. There was a definite sense of complacency permeating the GB squad, and although it was a natural response to being on top for so long, it's great to see some urgency returning.

  • so we had some areodynamic handlebars and some skinsuits with backwards facing seams..

    Big Louie.

Much is made of the kit but those "advantages" that other nations talk about aren't some bits of carbon (like it matters in a keirin or match sprint or scratch anyway! ) but the BC infrastructure of coaching and support.

  • He only had a broken spine and wasn't riding? HTFU Australia! ;)

Eh? I said our only medalist.. so obviously they rode. Anna Meares btw.

What's that Germany? Only 1 gold and 1 bronze? Not really working out that well for you now you're not coating your athletes brekkie in drugs is it? HTFU Germany

  • Smoked implies a substantial margin of victory, which was not what your A-Team had over our development squad.

I think you will find the average age of your team is about 4 years higher than our "a-team".

  • Mulder's Kilo in 1:00.341 was maybe an even greater achievement, showing that there is progress in the event despite the rank stupidity of the UCI/IOC.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. Great ride.

  • "The confusion over the omnium format reflects the unstable state of a sport which now has to contend with the prospect of the International Cycling Union banning kit as and when they decide, with the main criterion being whether it is "in the market place at a realistic price". The principle is that technology should be available to all, but the UCI president Pat McQuaid was unclear what the terms meant in reality, although his press officer Enrico Carpani suggested €10,000 (£9,000). The fact that Carpani's was merely a figure plucked out of the air is in itself an adequate reflection of where the UCI stands. What is clear is that the three leading track nations, Great Britain, Australia and Germany, are being targeted."

    so australia are cheating too?

How'd you work that out? BT bikes are available to the public. They're fucking expensive but they are available unlike all the shit your team use.

Fine, you won't mind then, that they will have to move to actual production bikes?

  • The Aussie team won stuff on production BTs, Krupeckaite won on a production Dolan, Mulder won on a production Koga Kimera, Hammer won on a production Felt TK1, the French won stuff on production Look 496s. The difference between those high end production bikes and the Team GB prototypes is tiny, almost certainly not enough to have affected the disposition of the medals in purely physical terms, although there is probably a worthwhile psychological gain, both as a boost to our riders and a detriment to other teams, from the perception that Team GB has a lead in technology. As I said earlier, and RPM concurred, it's not about the bike.

In the unlikely event that the UCI comes up with some rules which are in any way acceptable to the other big nations and manufacturers (bear in mind that they have to satisfy not just Aus, GB, France and Germany track teams but the likes of Trek, Cannondale, Cervelo etc. who will want the flexibility to issues pre-production or modified production frames to certain road riders), Team GB might have to sell some frames with Dolan or McLaren badges on them, but maybe they can be like Bristol cars and make 50 per year and refuse to sell them to people they don't like the look of.

  • Team GB are big fat cheating cheaters. Nyer!

Tell us how you really feel... ;)

  • The IOC and UCI have proven themselves to be idiots on numerous occasions. Why would they stop this kind of behaviour? Give them 20 years and everyone will have to be on Merckx's bike to set a record..

  • I thought all that stuff about GB bikes was as much about brailsford's weird mind games stuff rather than anything particularly whizz bang. brailsford's mantra is all about getting all the details sorted, so the bike is just one detail. it instils confidence in the riders (see Jamie Staff's blog posts for proof) as it allows them to focus on the job. I think we saw this with Pendleton over the weekend - she just looked awesomely focused and quick.

And re Olympics vs other events, as far as I know funding and everything that follows comes from medals, so Brailsford only has eyes on Olympic gold (silver and bronze). It's probably a gamble but if it works everyone will forget world champs 2010.

But to be fair, Clancy sounded entirely gutted about the team pursuit, and the Omnium win seemed not to do anything to console him.

  • How'd you work that out? BT bikes are available to the public. They're fucking expensive but they are available unlike all the shit your team use.

irony fail. nobody is cheating. getting caught would mean disqualification and i don't think that's in team GB's culture or any other teams for that matter. if you really wanted to cheat you would use drugs, far more effective than a pair of aero bars.

  • Fine, you won't mind then, that they will have to move to actual production bikes?

    Why should I?
Like I said, they are really only dolans with some carbon bars, and only some of the events utilise those bars.

  • Unless they were made of carbon bonded to a hybrid of testospeedterone! I have exposed Team GB's drug-enhanced bikes! Ha Ha! The truth shall be revealed!

ok I might have had a little too much coffee at this point.

  • Why should I?

    Dolans haha

I think you mean Charge Plugs.

  • Dolans haha

    I think you mean Planet-X

Why are you so fucking slow then?

  • I think you mean Charge Plugs.

    Charge Mugs.

As in, "Waiter, charge this Aussie mug for the burgers please, he lost a bet"

  • Check out Kanis's coach at 2.38 on Sunday. Scandal! Hope her husband doesn't mind!

  • what happened, did he touch Willy inappropriately?

  • Why are you so fucking slow then?

Because I sink more piss and eat more food than the entire fucking Team GB... and I'm not just talking about the cyclists either.

  • Charge Mugs.
As in, "Waiter, charge this Aussie mug for the burgers please, he lost a bet"

I'm sorry, all I caught was.. "Waiter, Aussie burgers please, lost a bet"

    BOOM! Ahh yeah.

  • I bet Crampton's gutted he didn't make the final - he finished faster than Hoy, and looked far less ragged. He'll fucking destroy the field in 2012. There. I've said it.

I emailed him that very same thing! He just got too cautious in the semi when he should have just disapeared with 1.5 laps to go....

  • Great minds, eh?

  • it was only one of three, but he went straight from the gun, and Hoy didn't expect it.

Not sure if getting a push from the holder is on though!

Yep the holder can push in the match sprint..

and no cheap trick, a legitimate tactic that Hoy should have been ready for

  • Nice to see it getting more interesting again.

I've liked Bauge since that amazing skid evasion he did when Tournant crashed on him.

    Sounds heart-stoppingly close, though:

    http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/uci-track-world-championships-cm/session-7/results

Was Sireau who crashed into him last year, and Hoy should have won that 3rd race, Bauge made a bad mistake being too high on the track and going too slow with a lap to go and Hoy went underneath him, he tried to give Bauge a flick lost control slightly and backed off, that cost him the win..needs to do more work on bike handling skills and having a more relaxed upper body...
