  • Cheers for the advice and help everyone. I think Im gonna try doing stretches for a week or so and see how that goes, if it persists then I think a doctor/osteopath visit is in order.
Ill also try and stop deepthroating people and craning my neck to stare round at pretty girls.

    Cheers

  • Mr Sorethroat,

    http://www.lfgss.com/thread29902.html

PM specifics or book an appointment. In my opinion you will recieve a more holistic and active treatment process to address the cause of your problem if you visit a Physio rather than undergoing passive treatments of symptoms.

There are many causes of neck pain and even more potential treatments.

    Regards.

  • So. Not RSI related, but neck related.

I think I brokered my neck. I woke up yesterday with a bit of soreness. Must have slept awkwardly. Whatever. Kept doing my thing. Played some polo in the afternoon. By the time I went to bed it was agony. Just lying down hurt like fuck. Eventually had to go find the codeine I got when I broke my collar bone. Up this morning, have about 40% movement and it's really hurty. Got to be at the cycle show but no way I can ride.

Any tips on how to make this go away? Is it a matter of patience? It fucking sucks.

  • torticollis, probably from sleeping funny. Will go away in a couple of days, don't stretch it too much.

  • get yo self to an osteopath asap!

  • Any radiating pain that transfers to arms?
Have you fallen onto outstretched arms, or carried a heavy load recently, that you wouldn't normally carry??

  • No. Just in the neck and the only heavy thing I carry is my polo bike up and down stairs. But that's normal.

  • How about the pain. Stabbing, sharp pain, or dull consistant ache.....

  • umm, hurty?

what's the difference between a dull consistent ache that is really quite painful and sharp pain that is consistent?

  • exactly the same thing happened to me a few years ago. I was working in a bar and got sent home as i could barely bend down to pick a pint glass off a shelf as it hurt too much, it sucks, but should go in a couple of days.

By the time i got to a doctor it was on the mend, and she just laughed at me. fucking GP cunts. id give it a day or so, i remember tiger balm seemed to help, but im not sure if it was just a distraction or whether it actually did any good...

  • Sharp pain, like a shooting pain that makes you flinch, or instantly adapt your posture to avoid pain may signal an impinged nerve.
A dull consistant ache is usually musculoskeletal, as is a "stiffening".
    (my italics show opinion!)
Move you head (if you can) in all of its plane of movements (up, down, left, right, side to side - ear to shoulder). Do any positions aggravate the pain?

  • Yes. I can only angle (tilt) it right by a few degrees before the pain gets too much. Looking down is more difficult than up. Turning right hurts more than left.

Seems to me to be a left side muscle issue. Too tight or something. Should I punch it until it loosens up? I may do that.

  • Ha! Get a rolling pin on it!!
    (actually, please dont)
All i can reccomend, without seeing your obviously limited range of movement, is to take anti inflamms (which i understand you are?) whilst keeping the site mobile. Don't move your head too much, but shrug and rotate your shoulders. This should help lengthen and shorten the muscles that attach to the base of the skull. Mobility is key, which is why we don't dish out many "collars" any more. Maybe seek further advice if things get worse mate. Chin up. (Ha ha ha ha ! Sorry, that was harsh!)

  • :(

I got shits to do and everything involves riding my bike. This blows.

  • Sounds like an acute spasm / torticollis and should settle with meds / heat / soft tissue work and regular stretching. If it doesn't then it may be joint or disc irritation and may require some manaul therapy. PM me if needed.

  • Fuck it, I typed it even if its no help...

Until 3 weeks ago, I had terrible pain in my neck and behind my right shoulder blade. I've been having regular deep tissue massages during which I am absolutely monstered by a large hairy man for half an hour a time. Its good for a few days, then fucked again.

Purchased an ergo-mouse and my problems were solved in a fortnight. It forces you to maintain better posture and operate your mouse directly in front of your shoulder, rather than to the right. Whe I use a normal mouse, its absurd how far to the right I was using it. Your hand sits vertically rather than horizontally.

They are supposed to be used in conjunction with a keyboard with the number pad on the left rather than the right. Have not bought that yet

Expensive, but Im on it 50 hours a week... more than my bike :(

Similar to this, when I was a desk monkey I used to get right shoulder pain. Started using mouse left handed (took a day or two to get used to it) and pain gone. Alternate now if doing long stints at pc.

  • I got shits to do

Why do those involve your neck? :B

    Hope it clears up soon!

  • Just a quickie, got out on the bike for the first time over the weekend and experienced some neck pain where I'm not used to the riding position... would a shorter stem help with this, so I'd be a bit more upright?
I'm used to riding a silly little Spooky hardtail were you're back's straight, so I've never had this problem before... any advice would be great!
I've got a 58 Dolan pre cursa and I'm about 6 - 6.1 ft if that helps at all.

    Cheers

    J

  • In my experience it does get better. When I first switched to a road bike I got a lot of neck ache and even twinges from looking back over my shoulder. Although I have shortened the stem and put an online post on and have compact bars to make the bike fit me better now, I'm sure a bit of the easing of the aching is to do with me conditioning to the position.

  • Thanks for that, I might try a shorter stem to see if that helps in the long run... guess I just need to get used to a new riding position!

  • Give it a few weeks before you start changing position so your body gets a chance to adapt
