  • Ended up being perfect pr for both Armstrong and ESPN

  • anyone got a recording of Armstrong on the show?

  • Is he like an American Jeremey Clarkson?

  • ESPN980 has just made the interview recording available.

    Lance on Tony Kornheiser

  • Is he like an American Jeremey Clarkson?

You mean Jezza Clarkson ISN'T an American? I thought the British accent was put on.
Who else bought the laughably unreliably Ford GT40 (the recent version)?

  • @GA2G - I think he has already sold it I believe. It spent more time with a mechanic, than actually with Jezza.

  • cheers Fasih

  • Listening now...

  • I've just listened to it, and what really stands out, is how powerful a person Lance Armstrong is.

I was very impressed. Lance was polite and friendly, but the scale of power was tipped so far in his direction,
I could almost feel the discomfort of the lunatic disc jockey. Nice one Lance.

  • Right at the end you can hear one of the pundits mention: " what's next? Are we going to be eating dogs?"

    Cycling=dead puppies.

  • Can't help but feel that Tony Cunthouser is reacting to keep his job rather than morals. The only difference made here, is he will now keep his job and probably have more listeners. Still very much a Cnt. He was far more animated and engaged in ranting about running cyclists down than he was discussing the benefits and importance of people making a decision to get on a bike.

Lance did come across well and hopefully would make a few of those regular listeners more considerate towards Cyclists. Getting the message through to just one potentially saves lives, but my fear is that those attitudes expressed previously are far to inbred to (want to) change.

  • Given that Martin 'only' gloried in 'scaring' cyclists, Kornheiser's outburst seems to bear closer similarities to Matthew Parrish's advocacy of stringing piano wire across roads to decapitate cyclists.

I thought the Armstrong programme was good listening and it definitely seemed to warrant Armstrong's involvement. He's not very clued up about cycle campaigning (doesn't have to be), but the finer details of what he said will have been lost on listeners and the main message got through. Whatever else you can say about him, it's good that he uses his profile in this way.

  • someone should pull his teeth out with pliers and sew his lips together. not to kill him, just shut him up a bit.

  • That cunt James Martin is on Ask Rhod Gilbert now.

PR trying to improve his public image no doubt.

  • I'll 'ave you, kornhieser!

  • nice dredge balki-san. are you still in blighty? i want to get drunk a lot this week.

@andrew_frankel on twitter if you'd like to let him know your thoughts.

  • I wonder how he behaves when he encounters somebody riding a horse?

  • I live in an area with lots of horses (wild and ridden horses) and lots of recreational cyclists.

The attitude towards horses is completely different and they are typically given much more respect (although the wild horses do have a few casualties each year, pretty much always occurring in the dark of night)

People will pass me on blind bends, into oncoming cars, pass way too close etc,. but as soon as they see a horse they slow right down, pass it widely etc,.

Something more imposing about a horse though I suppose...

  • Cresting a hill at 50mph? Get a grip.

  • Cyclists going downhill at 1/10 of 50mph too.

  • It's the way he sees it as so reasonable that he should be bombing along what he calls a 'fast country road', with blind hills that can quite understandably be taken at 50mph. And if he happens to kill a cyclist, for some reason he's the bad guy? Political correctness gone mad, and so on and so forth.

  • So when he crests the same hill at 50 mph only to run into a tractor with one of those nice, big forks in the front, that is obviously also an accident entirely of the farmer's making?

  • The attitude towards horses is completely different and they are typically given much more respect

To explain this in a Frankel/Clarkson stylee, that's because

    • the only people who drive cars for fun on English roads nowadays are posh twats.
    • the only people who have ridden horses on English roads in the past 50 years are posh twats.
    • all posh twats are inbred, so the thought of running over one's mother/sister/cousin/all-of-the-above is utterly unthinkable and must be avoided.

Frankel really has embarrassed himself and the magazine with this one. Disappointing.

  • I wrote this.

The problem with cyclists seems to be that they are in your way Andrew. I have driven a fast car on a county lane. I assume you've never experienced ridding quickly in a group of cyclists?
There are reasons both obvious and subtle why a group is safer and more compact two-up. Within that group there are constant calls of "car-up, car-down, hole-left" etc for the benefit of the riders safety and to keep us out of your way. Often the group will remain two-up (the approximate width of a car) because either; a/ the road is a full two lanes wide and you can pass a shorter group safely, b/ the road is too narrow for you to pass even a single cyclist safely.
I can't speak for the behaviour of all cyclists, just as you don't (thankfully) speak for all drivers. But I'll do my best to help you understand our actions out on the road so we can both enjoy our time there.

I really wanted to write this:

    you're a fucking sheep turd
