  • i bought £70K worth of index bonds last summer when the FTSE100 was around 4750.. looks like they are heading back that way.. but with 4 years remaining still hoping for a good return (£23K)

  • Bump.

I've got no idea what any of this shit means. And I do freelance work for a business news channel. Probably why they're not returning my calls.

    Anyway.

What could I do with 10 grand?

I'd like to buy a house one day. But equally, being self employed there's always the chance that I'd need to call on some of the cash at short notice.

  • Fixed Term Deposit or £5100 in cash ISA and £5100 in stocks&shares ISA.

£10,200 is max per year so you can up that after the first year. HSBC paying 2.4-2-6% on cash.

  • If you want to be certain of always having 10 grand and no less - cash ISA or premium bonds.
If you don't mind locking some away for a year or two (really could be a 5 years plus) - stocks and shares ISA.

To get a decent rate on cash ISA you need to commit to a year lock-in I think.

More or less what Hippy said.

  • Can one of you do it for me and just give me a call when I'm rich?

  • PM'd

  • Sure I'll take your money..

A guy here plays the markets a lot, shorting gold and all that kinda shit. He makes lots but I wonder how much he risks..

  • Is it wrong to post PMs?

Only I had a query... where you say 'mapped out', do you mean like... a treasure map?

  • Do it. Those guys make tonnes of monies..

  • Ha LOL etc

  • My ISA doesn't lock you in for a year, not many do. But if you have to withdraw money you do lose your allowance for that year. Basically, you can put ~£5k a year into a cash ISA, but if you take that £5k out at some point you can't put it back in until the next financial year. So I keep a normal savings account as a buffer and only move across what I know I won't need to the ISA.

If you have £10k and no ISA then you could open one now and pay £5k in, then in April pay the other half in.

  • That's the point - you can get your money out in an emergency but you'll lose the benefits. Same as a bonus saver but this is tax free and if you do get a fixed term one it will pay more than the variable option. Most banks offer both.

£5,100 into cash, £5,100 into stocks and shares, as I said above.

You don't have to put £5,100 in. You could put whatever you're comfortable locking down in. Have a bonus saver paying a little bit of interest (it all adds up) where you're only penalised a month's interest if you withdraw and have a normal account for spending. When this builds up enough transfer some into either the bonus saver or the ISA depending on how soon you might need it.

If you have £10k now that you definitely won't need, you could put 5,100 in cash ISA and the rest in stocks and shares ISA. Again a lot of banks will do both. Fidelity was mentioned earlier - guy at work reckons this is pretty good - you can choose the type and risk level of your portfolio.

I only did a cash ISA as I need to be flush to sort my EPO guy..

  • I don't see the point of a cash ISA at the moment unless you're going to leave it alone for 5+ years. And you have to be careful with funds, they can charge 1pc or 2pc management fees.

  • What's not to see? If you have a spare £5k in cash and don't want any risk a cash ISA is about the best you can do. You can leave it for 12 months or 50 years and you don't pay tax on the income which is a bonus if you're a higher earner.

    What's your better alternative?

Funds charge fees but they often make more money. "Spend money to make money. "

  • Make money.... go shopping.

I'm saying that Cash ISAs are the simplest, safest option for most people. You're asking me... what?

Ah, hold on, typo... I meant stocks and shares ISA...

  • Crossed wires. Sorry

  • Ah, hold on, typo... I meant stocks and shares ISA...

Ah, right. That makes more sense. Yes, a S&S ISA is something to leave alone.

My workmate's is basically his pension.

  • This has been both entertaining and helpful. Well done both.
