Rear wheel slipping?

  • My rear wheel does not seem to stay put for more than a few miles.

I have a Charge Plug with aero track hub and I am resetting the rear wheel every day as after being on the road for half an hour my chain goes a bit slack, so I re-set the rear wheel, stand on my spanner so it's fucking tight, then a few miles and a couple of pot holes later the process starts again. I have had this rear wheel for about 6 months and it has only been the last 6-7 weeks this has started happening.

Is there something I am missing? Any advice would be nice.

  • get chaintugs.

  • track nuts + bigfuckoarfspanner

  • get chaintugs.

Is that not just a way around a problem rather than a fix?

  • Is that not just a way around a problem rather than a fix?

well you have a "problem" and chaintugs would sort out, there is not much else you can do. Apart from HTFU and tighten the knuts even more, but even that will probably just thread the nuts.

  • I will look into tugs then, don't know much about them. Bit pissed off this is an issue, bought new nuts and I am not sure I could get them tighter, 14st standing in a spanner is quite a lot I think.

    Cheers

  • Does it definitely go *too *slack? You know it's best to have a bit? You might be setting your tightness standards too high. You might find it's just setting in a bit and will stay "a bit slack" and you'll get used to it. How much can you wiggle it up and down?

(saying all this, I bought a tensioner today)

  • It is more that I can feel about 5mm movement in my pedalling before drive. This has not been an issue before.

  • if your putting that much pressure on it you'll probably damage your axle/bearings + your tracknut domes will probably have warped causing them to grip like shit. Get some Miche ones, much better quality than anything i've found.

  • I have recently replaced the ones that came with the bike with Halo ones, I did notice movement in the axle whilst tightening this evening that has not occured before.

  • What's the surface like on your locknuts?

  • The actual nut is smooth with a serrated washer. It's a Halo set that are brand new. I previously had serrated flange nuts which I had the same problem with

Sorry for late reply finished work at 1, just got home

  • Oh it's a halo hubs, don't expect them to be decent.

change the track nuts for some proper one.

  • get 2x dura ace track nuts
better quality / stronger grip ?

what's wrong with that? sounds like you want to run your chain too tight.

  • Might be worth checking if the axle's bent. Take the rear wheel out of the frame and give the axle a spin, see if it wobbles.

    +1

5mm is nothing, your chain does not sound slack at all.

Oh, ok. Just thought it felt loose, when it first happened I thought my BB had gone.

    Cheers for the replies guys!

Halo hubs and track nuts are fine. I am using them with no issues at all.
I have never had to resort to standing on spanners although I do wrench them up as tight as possible by hand (which is very tight due to my immense strength)

What is not proper about the Halo track nuts?

  • I've got chain tugs and I still got a slack chain after a few rides. wft?
I did buy cheap track nuts in my ignorance though.
I guess I should upgrade / look at my tug fitting!

maybe the bottom bracket slipped back a bit :-)

Was it a brand new chain, could it have been initial settling in/stretch. Wild guessing as don't know if that can actually happen!

  • BB Slipped? Eh?

New everything, yes. I thought about the 'settling in period' (if it exists) initially. It still happened so got some tugs. Was a slack as a ... after 3 rides already.
Will see how I go after this tightening.

  • Careful with the nut tightening. And don't buy cheap nuts. I got some new ones from VeloSolo, and the washer crushed into a pancake, thus loosing its ability to wash and promptly creating a nice little bevel in my dropouts. Great.
And the fucker still slipped. I didn't think that was possible with the nut firmly embedded in my frame, but my chain was definitely drooping after a few days.

I'm onto chain tugs now. Don't know if it'll solve it completely, but should help.

SJS do a cheap MKS alternative.

  • Those DA Track Nuts are proving fairly elusive.
    Only found these

I had a lose cone on my hub which may have been my problem.

  • Over tightening a chain will make it wear faster, and wear your sprocket and chainring teeth too, though none of this should be noticable within a week or two.
Track nuts normally leave an impression in the paint with their serated bits when well tightened, so it should be quite easy to see if your axle has moved (unless you have stainless/chromed dropouts - in which case stick a bit of paint on.)

When you say 'It is more that I can feel about 5mm movement in my pedalling before drive' are you quite sure that isn't the sprocket tightening up? Double check your sprocket and lockring.
