  • I've heard great things about them but it doesn't have AF so that's probably where much of the price difference comes from.

  • No Autofocus! Looks like Im gonna go for it's beautifully expensive counterpart!

  • I'm looking to take on a pretty large project next winter

    What's the project? :)

  • Get the 17-40. I deeply regret selling mine.

It involves snow and people on boards, have a vague plan but still deciding on a few things, not gonna reveal much just in case it's a huge flop.

Glad to know you thought highly of it, looks like I'll be getting one.

  • Another vote for the 17-40 f4L here. Amazing Swiss-Army-Knife of a lens, quality on par with the 16-35 f2.8L and a bargain price. Unless you're shooting in low light all the time, the f4L is absolutely fine. I really appreciate that extra 5mm at the long end too.

Cool, hope it works out as planned fella!

    Perfect, Plan is to have 17-40 f4, sigma 50mm f1.4 and 135mm f2.

Cheers, it should just depending on money for the holiday and timing of exams right now.

  • Hoo, good ones Will, ghastly good.

    Candidates should possess:

    Good working knowledge of English

    An interest in new products

    A good eye for detail

A keen interest in photography and knowledge of imaging software such as Corel Photopaint would be beneficial, but not essential as full training will be given.

    PM me if interested

  • Will, those are great. Unfortunately I can't give you any more rep though.

IndraRipper - wrt the 17-40, if you're shooting in snow and other awfulness then make sure you stick a filter on the lens as that seals it against water and dust.

It'll help seal it a bit, it won't make it impregnable.

  • True. Some filters are better sealed than others too.

  • The new canon 16-35 f4 IS just came last week. That might be a very good option depends on the price.

  • Hey is there a decent equivalent Canon version of the Nikon 14-24? Can't see a direct opposite, maybe I'm missing something?

  • My mate helped me shoot the Tweed run at the weekend, and was complaining that his 24-105 f4 wasn't wide enough (I told him not to buy it). Obbs there is the above mentioned 16-35/40 f2.8/4 but I know he likes his fisheye (old skateboarder).

  • The Nikon 14-24 is the only lens that canon doesn't have an equivalent of. The old 16-35 isn't that great and the new one ain't cheap. The 17-40 can be had new for around £550.

  • So my 17-40 f/4 is perm attached to my camera. It's only rarely that I wish I had more zoom. Works really well with the Sony A7R (and metabones adapter).

  • I honestly though that said "sperm" and had to read your post about three times...

  • Not shot much with this lens yet, but the lack of distortion compared to my 50mm f1.4 is impressive.

  • WANT (a version of that for my Nikon).

  • I do wish it came with a black vinyl ring decal to black out the lens text though. Might have to make one.

  • The 5D looks very good with the 40mm so BUY my Canon 5D please !! :)
