(Ed. kept my favourite in here)

Quite enjoy having a half decent camera in my pocket again, just wish it had a 35mm lens rather than 28mm. Is there something similar for not too much money with a 35mm lens?

This was my problem. GRD is probably my favourite camera of all time but couldn't get on with 28mm. I have black x100 and do like it but it's not the same: it's not pocketable and it doesn't feel like an automatic (that's the charm of the x100, I know, but that's also what makes it completely different to GRD). Digital MJU please!

  • What are my options for a decent compact? I love my GF1 but I'm looking for something that I can fit in a jersey pocket and carry at all times.

  • Grd3 if you like 28mm lenses

Thanks! Wasn't too keen it before, but it's growing on me. Always interesting to hear what others like and how different it tends to be compared to my preference

  • ^^^I really like my canon powershot s90. Old but can be picked up cheap as chippies second hand

  • @kboy, it reminds me of a Sugimoto seascape but with different proportions.

  • Really nice shots :)

  • Thanks! Its a sad old sight. Especially as I'm from merseyside and to see a mersey ferry sat rusting away isn't nice! My mum said she'd had a go at steering it some 28 years ago so I shot it for her really.

  • @kboy, it reminds me of a Sugimoto seascape but with different proportions.

    Just googled Sugimoto, great tip!

  • Did you see the exhibition they did recently of his seascapes with Rothko paintings? One of the best exhibitions I've ever seen.

  • nope, where was it?

  • Just got back from the Martin Parr / Tony Ray Jones exhibition at the science museum. Highly recommended. It was interesting seeing the photos Parr had selected from Jones' unused shots - you could definitely see his hand in the chosen images.

It actually made me warm to Parr a bit more - I've previously been of the opinion that his photos are kind of taking the piss out of people; his Last Resort stuff from New Brighton seemed like a bit of a snarky remark on poor northerners and then his stuff on the middle class could be construed as a way of remedying any opinions people might have had about it. His photographs are also usually from an outsider's perspective too which reinforces this. Tom Wood, on the other hand is always more involved in the subjects and become part of the scene in a way.

Anyway, the stuff in this show basically changed my mind about it, it seemed more sensitive somehow.

    Dicki - I like that one ^

  • nope, where was it?

    RA of Arts I think.

Yeah saw the TRJ & MP exhibition in December, great stuff. Loved how you could see all his workings. Very well curated.

  • nah fuji it is. was a bit nervous as im buying it from someone on craigslist. hope i dont die

Was making a similar choice - ended up buying a Pentax MX1 - really enjoying using it and have taken some nice pics - amazing value.

  • yea i had a look at it but I wanted a viewfinder.

really happy with the x20 so far

  • One from today. I kept waiting for a moment when lots of people were taking pictures at once but it only happened before I got the camera out... Was a funny scene, all the statues and loads of people snapping them with their tablets etc.

  • That'd be a good montage, puzzling together one image from a few photos

  • Bit of a dilemma.

Park Cameras are listing a used Canon 15-85 EF-S for £400. Depending on its condition (described as excellent) that seems like a reasonable deal, and my 60D could do with something better than the old 18-55 kit lens that I got with the 450D. Default is currently the fantastic 50mm 1.4 but that obviously has its limitations.

Problem is that I wouldn't mind also having a more portable option and for similar money I could pick up an X20.

Tough choice, especially considering the popularity of compacts around here.

  • x20

  • I'd go X20, too.

The old kit lens is still a valid piece of equipment.

  • That's about as unanimous as I was expecting. Will go take a look at lunchtime.
