how would you sync the shutter of the camera with the sensor? the same applies for iso.
Using the flash sync to turn the sensor on? How does it know when to turn off though? You could set the ISO with a little dial on the digital back. Also, film advance would be difficult.
So yeah, I think a cheap aftermarket digital back would be a crap idea. The only real advantage would be the 'feel' of using an old camera (i.e. metal knobs and levers rather than plastic buttons). Otherwise DSLR + old lenses.

you'd have to set iso on both camera and back at the same time then: and adding a knob to the back of the digital bit would mean somehow modifying the existing film back, which either means ruining the camera's film capabilities, or creating different models of the digital back for each camera and thus ruining the 'compatibility' element of the hypothetical product. so yeah sorry for the ramble, it's a shit idea.
what i would be interested in is a cheaper digital body without lcd, with a high quality sensor, an m42 or pentax k mount, with the exposure and aperture controls in the traditional place, and the ability to shoot aperture priority.
is that too much to ask?

Yes.
cheaper
And that's why.
Camera manufacturers aren't interested in what you want, they are interested in what you'll buy.
They know that if you want the look and feel of something traditional then the best way to make money from you isn't to give you the simple camera you want to buy cheaply, it's to make you aspire to/lust after the likes of the Fuji X100 or Leica M9 etc.
I doubt we will ever see a new camera coming out with an m42 or Pentax K mount for exactly the same reason. The manufacturers would far rather you be tied into their brand of lens or at least have to buy an adaptor to use m42 and PK mount lenses.
Maybe some day cameras will be like PCs and you'll be able to buy the sensor you want and the shutter you want and save some money by getting a rubbish screen or mising it out and then getting your geeky mate to put it together for you.

ha, i know i was only joking.
it doesn't make good business sense to produce a camera for an obselete lens mount, even i can see that.

Been pondering selling my 5d mk1 + 50/1.4 to partly fund an analogue bessa r2 and some m-mount lenses + a micro 4/3 body to use the same lenses digitally
Anyone done the same or have thoughts on it? I wonder how much i will miss full frame, and how much quality will suffer? Don't print many shots and doubt I will, so huge MP isn't an issue. Noise is though as I shoot quite a lot in low light. That said, the 5d doesn't really impress me on iso 400 and above
My plan is something like this
panasonic gf2 body only = £299
bessa r3a = £350
Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 VM Nokton Classic = £400
total: £1050that's without looking around properly
and if i can get £600ish for my 5d with battery grip, and say £175ish for the 1.4, it's not that far off....
Thoughts on this? Good / Bad idea?

the noise on the 5d is very film like and nice looking noise, i think you are only gaining a bit of portability though changing. (i haven't pixel peeped gf2 files)

have to read up more about 4/3 bodies, the gf2 is just for ballpark cost
think I need to go to a shop and have a play around with bodies and see what I like most.

Think the GF2 performs pretty well at high ISOs so you might be gaining some low light performance along with the portability.
If it was me though I think the fact that the film camera was bigger than the digital one would mean I'd use it less. Lack of AF on the digital would only compound this and I think it'd sit on a shelf most of the time. That's just me though.

Since selling all of my camera gear, except for an OM10 and a few lenses, when I left the uk, I've been missing the convenience of digital, so I was planning on buying a 5D, but after really thinking about what I'm actually going to be doing with it, I decided to spend the money on a high-end compact instead. I went for the Leica d-lux 5, which I'm very happy with. Obviously it's not quite the same league as the 5D, but the lens is unreal for such a compact, and the image quality and noise is so much better than I expected from such a small camera. It's so convenient to be able to take half decent photos, and reasonable hd video in various aspect ratios, through a decent lens, on a camera that fits in my pocket.
I bought the leather case for it too, which is pretty cool. looks very 'traditional-leica', and protects the camera well. It also comes with a free, legal version of lightroom aswell, which is what persuaded me to go for it over a lumix lx-5 I'll have some sample shots soon, hopefully. -

whats the size like compared to a G-11?

@kboy: Any particular reason you're going for Panasonic over Olympus? The GF2 really is gorgeous but Olys have in-body IS - nice to have in dim light, I assume.
No reasoning at all really, it's more to get a ballpark price
read up a bit and in-body is seems like a good thing. Need to try them out before I decide, main thing will be the easy / logic of changing aperture / shutter speed without fiddling through menu after menu

hmm wanna swap the 5d body (no grip) for my Oly EP1 + 17mm pancake :) ?

A G11 looks like this in a hand:
A d-lux 5 looks like this in a hand:

Just got given a 450D... Its my first dslr. Really like it, first thing I did was set it to shoot RAW and then ordered an m42 lens adaptor so my super takumars will work on it.

is this a gear queer thread?
thought so. -

Love my 5d just for the fact it's so much like shooting film. My perfect digital camera, until there's affordable digital rangefinders. Still love my yashica electro gsn for that reason.

I think I just bought an x100.
Should be here today. Anyone got any experience with it?
-
• #549
nope, but i'd be curious to see what you think. would like to try one out and see how it is
and i'd like even more if you could change lenses on it

I quite like the fact that you cant... less faff, less to carry, and I'm used to shooting on fixed lens film cameras.
Exited, but defs don't know enough. I think it's going to be a steep learning experience.
Few shots from Billingsgate market this morning
